Note: ost important thing to state at the beginning is that his second wife was not Anna Rosina Odenwelder as many have listed, but Catharine Fritz. Consult notes below which come from researcher Ed Deal of Seattle. "Children of Jacob Diehl, son of Fredk, and m1 Barbara Croman, His second marriage is not to Anna Odenwelder, that was a 1760 marriage of Simon Jacob Diehl Jr (Code F1 in my book) to Anna Wagner. The Rev Hinke translation of Tohickon Reformed has it correct as Wagner...another translation, I think by Rev. Leiby, has it wrong as Odenwelder. (SIMON) JACOB DIEHL, b. c 1770, d. c NOV 1854, m1. c 1790 to BARBARA CROMAN/GROMAN (b. 4 APR 1769, d. 4 MCH 1841,[1] d of MICHAEL & EVA CROWMAN,[2] bur. St. John’s Union AKA Flatland Cemetery). There are several JACOB DIEHLs of roughly the same age in Bucks and Northampton Co., including one each in the F1 and F6 branches of the Code F family. We have struggled at length to assign them to the correct branches but still may be wrong.[3] Both daughters were baptized at Plainfield Reformed. JOHN DIEHL b. 5 NOV 1790, m. ELIZABETH GROMAN. + ANNA ELIZABETH DIEHL, b. 7 MCH 1793, m. JOHN GROMAN. + SUSANNA DIEHL b. 23 JULY 1797, m1 SAMUEL GROMAN. + JACOB and BARBARA DIEHL must have separated and possibly divorced c 1805, as he has another family with CATHARINE FRITZ (b. PA c 1778,[4] likely d of JOHN & ELIZABETH FRITZ) by at least 1811 and likely earlier. JACOB remained in Northampton Co. while BARBARA DIEHL is found back in Richland Twp.[5] In his will JACOB DEAHL specifically lists the three children above as being from his first marriage and the 7 children below from his second marriage.[6] The following series of land transactions provide proof for the second wife of JACOB DIEHL. JACOB DIEHL and his neighbor BASTIAN HORN in Richland Twp. entered into the joint ownership of property in Plainfield Twp., Northampton Co. in 1792.[7] This partnership was short-lived, as they partitioned the property two years later, but this deed also now lists them as residents of Plainfield Twp., not Richland Twp., Bucks Co., so we can say JACOB moved to Northampton Co circa 1792.[8] In 1803 JACOB & BARBARA DIEHL sold off 25 of his 50 acres in Plainfield Twp.[9] In 1809 JACOB DIEHL purchased land adjacent to his other land from a neighbor, JOHN FREDERICK FRITZ.[10] In 1812 JACOB DIEHL and CATHARINE FRITZ baptized an illegitimate child at Plainfield Reformed.[11] Of some confusion, in 1828 JACOB DIEHL sells the same land he bought from JOHN FRITZ to CATHARINE FRITZ, spinster, of Plainfield Twp.[12] A few years later JACOB DIEHL bought additional land from JOHN FRITZ.[13] At some point in time, perhaps after BARBARA DIEHL died in 1841, JACOB DIEHL must have married CATHARINE FRITZ. They jointly sell off land in Plainfield Twp. in 1849[14] and 1850,[15] and appear together in the 1850 US Census. We assume CATHARINE died ante 1852, as she is not mentioned in the will of JACOB DEAHL. Children of m2, in the order listed in JACOB’s will: GEORGE DIEHL b. c 1807, alive 1852. MARY DIEHL b. c 1809, d. ante 1852, m. unknown. +F616. SAMUEL DIEHL b. 9 DEC 1811,[16] alive 1852. MAGDALENA (LENA) DIEHL b. 10 MAY 1815, m. HENRY KNECHT. SARAH DIEHL b. c 1820, d. ante 1860, m. MICHAEL ANDREWS. CATHARINE DIEHL b. unk., m. HENRY COMFERS/COWPEIS,[17] alive 1852. JACOB DIEHL b. unk., alive 1852.[18] [1] St. John’s (Flatland) Cemetery Inscriptions. Buried next to her daughter ELIZABETH DIEHL GROMAN. There are many DIEHLs and GROMANs buried in this cemetery. [2] Bucks Co. Will of MICHAEL CROWMAN of Richland Twp., 1809, Bk. 8-21, refers to daughter BARBARA, wife of JACOB DIEHL. His wife is likely EVA MARIA ACKERMAN, d of STEPHEN ACKERMAN[3] The obituary of TILGHMAN H. DIEHL (F61151) in the PA German Society Proceedings., vol. 23, 1912, specifically lists him as a descendent of FREDERICK and SUSANNA (SPINNER) DIEHL and traces his heritage as outlined in this chapter. TILGHMAN was born in 1847 and would have known his grandfather JOHN (d. 1871) and perhaps his great-grandfather JACOB (d. 1854). However, the death date listed in the obituary for JACOB DIEHL (7 JUNE 1855) can’t be correct, since TILGHMAN DIEHL’s ancestor JACOB DIEHL had his will probated on 29 NOV 1854. We remain perplexed. Thanks to TIM GRUBER for finding this key piece of the puzzle. [4] 1850 US Census r. 803, p. 372, Plainfield Twp., Northampton Co., PA. [5] Bucks Co. See notes under daughter Catharine and her spouse]. [18] Possibly the JACOB DIEHL who m. HANNAH ____ and moved to Monroe Co., PA." This is the end of the research of Ed Deal. Another source for the birth and death dates of Jacob Diehl is his headstone in the German reformed Church cemetery in Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania. From another researcher, Tom, in the Bucks County Genealogical Society I received in 2015: "I find no evidence of Jacob [the father] in Bucks County after his second marriage. He died in Buskhill Twp, Northampton Co. His daughters Lena Knecht, Sarah Andrews and Catharine Comfer are all living in northern Northampton or Monroe County, in the vicinity of Bushkill. Yes, his first wife and his three children by her all lived in Bucks County. But it's clear that Jacob left his first family behind. As I mentioned, his three daughters were all living in the Buskhill area in 1850. Stroudsburg is not that far from Bushkill. Jacob most likely named his children in his will in birth order. The order of the children may not be exact. Jacob's Northampton County 6 Jan 1852 will is the definitive source for his children. He bequeathes "unto my seven children begotten by my last wife" and names them individually (the daughters with married names) in the order I have listed them in the family group sheet. He then refers to 'my three children by my first wife" naming them also with daughters connected with husbands names. While the order is followed here based on the order of their mention in the will, that may not be a chronological listing of his children. Here are excerpts from the contents of his will and that of his first wife, Barbara Croman: Northampton Co Will Book 7-121 JACOB DEAL/DEAHL of Bushkill Twp, cordwainer To my 7 children begotten by my last wife, 7 equal shares: Son George Deal; children of daughter Mary; son Samuel Deal; dau Lena m. Henry Knecht; dau Sarah m. Michael Andrew; dau Caty m. Henry Comfer; son Jacob Deal the omission of my three children by my first wife, that is, John Deal, Elizabeth, m. John Groman, and Susanna, widow of Samuel Groman, decased, have had their full shares in my lifetime. Names son-in-law Henry Knecht as executor. Signed 26 JAN 1852 Jacob Deal. Witnesses: Lewis Miche & Maria N. Patrick, Proved 29 NOV 1854. Bucks Co Will #1841-7544 Will of BARBARA DIEHL of Richland Twp. Bk 12-146 Code F1 Dated 7 MAY 1839 / Proved 7 APR 1841 To dau Susanna Croman, my bed & bedding, my hog, all my vegetables and eatables. To grandchild Hannah Croman, my quilt, one coverlet, two flat irons & my weaving apparel, To dau Susanna Croman & grandchild Hannah Croman in equal shares the woolwheel $10 to Susanna amount coming to me from my son John Diehl for my lots divided into 3 shares: one to son John Diehl, one to dau Susanna Croman and one to 3 grandchildren, viz: Elias Croman, Hanna Croman, Elizabeth Croman. Son John Diehl as executor, Witn: Wm B. Kaemmer & Johannes Bergey. Another source for the names of the children of Jacob Diehl are from "The Old Graveyard of Northampton and Adjacent Counties in the State of Pennsylvania", by John Eyerman, F.Z.S -Volume 1, June, 1899 and "Annotations on the records of the German Reformed Cemetery, Easton, PA". http://www.pagenealogy.org/LEHIGH.HTM Since all of Jacob Diehl's children from his second wife were born before the death of his first wife I feel it is obvious that they were divorced, but I have yet to find evidence of it." This is the end of the research of Tom. The 'aft 1805' date for the marriage of Catharine and Jacob allows for the dual possibility that they either married about this time as per the notes of Ed Deal above (in spite of the fact that no divorce record from Barbara has been found) or were married after Barbara's death in 1841, and the children were originally illegitimate as per the notes above. Jacob and Catharine Diehl are together on the 1850 census. "United States Census, 1850," database with images, <i>FamilySearch</i>(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4C4-L2S : accessed 27 August 2015), Jacob Diehl, Plainfield, Northampton, Pennsylvania, United States; citing family 144, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.). Subsequent research in 2016 found the proof of death for Barbara Croman in the Richland Union cemetery. The inscription reads "Aged 72Y 11M 3D." CHILDREN: The after 1852 death date for most of the children of Jacob Diehl is based on their being mentioned in his 1852 will. The children of his daughter Mary are mentioned, but she is not gifted which implies a pre 1852 death. The source for the marriage of Caty to Henry Compers and Sarah to Phillip Mixsell is "The Old Graveyards of Northampton and Adjacent Counties" on Ancestry.com, and "Annotations on the records of the German Reformed Cemetery, Easton, PA". http://www.pagenealogy.org/LEHIGH.HTM. The marriage of Caty to Henry is also mentioned in Jacob's will, cited above. There has been previous confusion that Sarah Diehl was married to Phillip Mixsell. This originates with the same 1850 census cited above in which Jacob Diehl, Sarah's father, is residing with a Philip Mixsell and his wife Sarah. It has been assumed that as Jacob is residing in the home that this Sarah must be his daughter. While it is confusing and tempting to come to this conclusion, it should be remembered that relationships are not recorded on the 1850 census, and that there is no documented indication that Jacob is the 'father' of Sarah Mixsell. All we know for sure is that he was a resident there. Original data: Seventh Census of the United States, 1850; (National Archives Microfilm Publication M432, 1009 rolls); Records of the Bureau of the Census, Record Group 29; National Archives, Washington, D.C. Year: 1850; Census Place: Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania; Roll: M432_802; Page: 109B; Image: 225. We do know, however, that Jacob's daughter Sarah married Michael Andrews as per the 1852 will and 1850 census cited above in the earlier paragraphs. For marriage info on his other children refer to notes under their own pages.
