Notes
a. Note: man and Reuben- who for an unknown reason changed the spelling of their surname to Andre.
We first meet Michael Jr. as a minor petitioner for a pension based on his father's death in the Civil War.
A website now called Fold3.com has some of the Civil War pensions online. According the Northampton County Claim for Minor Pension for Michael Andrew Jr. (in my possession) Michael Andrew Sr. (Anders, Andrews) died of chronic diarrhea while serving in the Civil War in Louisiana in 1864. Sarah had died in 1852 a month after the birth of Michael who was under 14 when Michael Sr. died in the war. As an orphan he applied for a pension. The transcription of one of the copies of the documents is in possession of Neil Rutman.
On the page entitled 'Claim for Minor Pension' is listed the birth date of Michael Jr - 22 August 1852-and the death date of Michael Sr and Sarah, along with the cause and place of Michael's death. The date of their marriage is once again referred to as either 23 or 24 years ago from 1866.
Michael was previously found on the 1860 census with his widowed father four years before his death in the Civil War. The Susan Andrew residing in the home is most likely Michael Sr.'s mother.

We next find Michael Andre (using the spelling change adopted by his brothers Reuben and Herman) in the South Dakota State Penitentiary as a prisoner. This is based on a three part match-the prisoners name, Pennsylvania as the state of his birth, and most telling his birth as August 1852. The petition cited above gives the minor Michael's birth as 22 August 1852. This record states he was married and had three children living.

On attempting to locate his wife I did a search for a female Andre of the same age and found an Annie with three children in Codington County, South Dakota. She is married without husband in the home and married approximately the same number of years listed in the prison census. The oldest two children were born in Minnesota and the youngest in South Dakota.

The number of children of this couple is in dispute. Michael's prison census gives that his wife was the mother of 4 children with three living, but Annie's 1900 record says she was the mother of 10 (!) children with three living. If they married as the two records indicate 1870-1873, and Annie's list of ten children is to be believed, several would have already died by the time of the 1885 census cited in the next paragraph. The following citation was the only listing I could find that mght possibly be an infant death for this couple:
 Name Baby Andre
 Event Type DEATH
 Event Date 03 Mar 1884
 Event Place Minnesota, United States
 Gender Male
 Age 0
 Birth Year (Estimated) 1884

Substantiating this marriage is found a M. and Anna ANDRE, with the correct birth years and place, plus son Ed, found in the 1885 Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota census.
Combining the identity of the minor petitioner Michael Andrew (whose brothers altered their surname to Andre), born in Pennsylvania in 1852 the son of Michael Andrew, with Michael Andre born in Pennsylvania in 1852, the in and out convict married to Annie Best, is based on the above circumstantial evidence. It would be ideal to find the South Dakota Michael's death certificate listing his parent's names to make a final substantiation for this connection.
Michael is found post prison on the 1910 census as divorced. "United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPXL-SKM : 20 October 2015), Michael Andre in household of Frank Konner, Watertown Ward 2, Codington, South Dakota, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 128, sheet 15B, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,375,490.
