Note: sus cited below. This is strong, but circumstantial, evidence. A Joseph H Andrew, is enumerated in the household of Michael Andrew Sr on the 1850 Northampton County census, born abt 1845. As per the notes under his father's page, he is not found with his older brother, Herman on the 1860 census even though Herman is documented as living until 1925. On the 1870 census a Joseph H Andrew, born abt 1846-47 is living in the household of Rebecca Steinmetz, and with the most logical reading of the small household enumerated, is the husband of Mary Andrew and father of the 4 month old Emma Andrew (four months old based on consulting the original document). Based on the similar county, the closeness in age and the consistent 'Joseph H', I connect the married Joseph H Andrew of the 1870 Northampton County census with the Joseph H Andrew of the 1850 Northampton County census. If this is the case, he is the only brother who retained the surname spelling of his father. Name Joseph H Andrew Event Type Census Event Year 1870 Event Place Pennsylvania, United States Gender Male Age 23 Race White Race (Original) W Birth Year (Estimated) 1846-1847 Birthplace Pennsylvania Jesse Steinmetz M 41 Pennsylvania Rebecca Steinmetz F 62 Pennsylvania Joseph H Andrew M 23 Pennsylvania Mary Andrew F 20 Pennsylvania Emma Andrew F 0 Pennsylvania The 'bef. 1870' marriage year for Joseph and Mary is based on the oldest child listed onthe 1870 census cited above. Daughter Emma Andrew, age 10, is found again with the Steinmetz family (now with a younger brother, Robert F) on the 1880 Northampton County census. Both parents, Joseph H and Mary Andrew are missing, and have not been found on a nationwide census search for 1880. It is on the basis of the 1870 and 1880 census connection with the Steinmetz family (the 1880 census listing them as grandparents of Robert and Emma) that I conclude Joseph's wife Mary was a Steinmetz. While both parents Joseph H and Mary are missing, there IS a Jos. H Andrew living in Philadelphia on the 1880 census of the same age as our Joseph H Andrew, and listed as widowed. In 1880 he is a clerk in a store and on the 1870 census he worked in a brickyard. Not compatible professions, but a possibility in that day. "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWJK-QPH : 11 August 2016), Jos H Andrew in household of John K Boecky, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district ED 376, sheet 375D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1178; FHL microfilm 1,255,178. No record for the death of a Mary Andrew in Northampton County or for a Joseph H Andrew has been found.
