Note: The source for the first marriage of Serilda to James McKnight is "Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2013," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XD7F-Y5M : 8 December 2014), James K. Mcknight and Jarelda Martin, 23 May 1852; citing Lawrence, Ohio, United States, reference cn 215; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 317,716. Name James K. Mcknight Event Type Marriage Event Date 23 May 1852 Event Place Lawrence, Ohio, United States Spouse's Name Jarelda Martin The source for the reconstruction of the James McKnight family is the 1860 Lawrence County, Ohio census record. "United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCL1-WX1 : 30 December 2015), James Mc Knight, 1860. There is an unsubstantiated legend in our family, the source being my grandmother Ethel Marie Moore Rutman and her sister Mildred, told to me in 1982, that James never returned from the Civil War but abandoned his family. The implication is that he survived the war but never came to Lawrence County. My grandmother and her sister probably heard this from older generations. There is no death record in Lawrence County for James and no Civil War papers have been found for a James McKnight from Ohio that is clearly the James from Lawrence County, so at present (2017) his post 1860 history is unknown. Serilda remarried in 1866. Subsequent research in 2018 found the pension application by widow Serilda McKnight in 1866 for pension benefits. In light of this the legend from my grandmother may be more colorful than true, and James may/must have died in the Civil War. Name: Sarilda A Mcknight Gender: Female Relation to Head: Widow Spouse: James H McKnight Serilda Martin's children by James McKnight on the subsheet, have been given "after 1900" or "after 1910" death dates as all of her children except one (Emily McKnight) were living in 1900, and William McKnight has been found on the 1910 census. The sources for the initial reconstruction of the families of the first marriages of Serilda and William, and their subsequent marriage to each other is family are the 1850, 60, 70, 80 Lawrence County census records. Serilda's second husband, William Johnson's age is listed as 43 on the 1860 census (1817), 51 in the 1870 census ( 1819), and 64 in the 1880 census (1816). "Kentucky, County Marriages, 1797-1954," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5PX-LKG : accessed 21 May 2017), William Johnson and Serilda Mcknight, 04 Oct 1866; citing Boyd, Kentucky, United States, Madison County Courthouse, Richmond; FHL microfilm 344,011. Other sources include death certificate for Serilda Martin Johnson, and Lawrence County, Ohio births, film 41147, pt 1 and 4. The date of death for Serilda Martin Johnson is 22 April, 1922 on the Ohio Death Index, Ohio. Division of Vital Statistics. Death Certificates and index, December 20, 1908-December 31, 1953. State Archives Series 3094. Ohio Historical Society, Ohio. Her Ohio State death certificate, however, lists 22 September. The source for the death of William Johnson is the Lawrence County, Ohio death book, held in the Lawrence County Courthouse in Ironton. Serilda is found on the 1870 and 1880 census with William Johnson in Lawrence County. The above mentioned microfilm, Lawrence County, Ohio births, film 41147, pt 1 and 4 has Nancy born 24 May 1872 and John W. 18 Jun 1870, which is in conflict with Nancy's death certificate, which lists her as being born in 1870, most likely an error. The 1870 census also lists John as older than Nancy Ellen and lists John as born in 1870 and Nancy born in 1873. To further complicate the matter, the 1900 census lists John's birthday as June 1871. I have given John the birth year of 1871 and Nancy born a year later, in 1872. The dates of death and other related statistics for John Johnson and wife Sarah Crawford come from their Ohio State Death Certificates. Their marriage date comes from undocumented source on newfamilysearch.com. Subsequent to the writing of this paragraph a confirmation of John's 18 Jun 1870 birth was found on Ancestry.com. Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011. Original data:"Ohio Births and Christenings, 1821-1962." Index. FamilySearch, Salt Lake City, Utah, 2009, 2011. Index entries derived from digital copies of original and compiled records. The birthdate of Nancy comes from her Ohio State Death Certificate. It is in conflict with her birthdate listed on Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 which gives 24 May 1872. I have used the birth record for her date of birth. The source for the family of Byrdine Johnson is the 1930 Scioto County, Ohio census report. His birth record is from the 1900 Lawrence County census record and marriage to Lyda Smeltzer is from the Lawrence County Marriage Books. According to my grandmother Ethel Marie Moore Rutman, the son Syrdine, who was her uncle, never married. This is confirmed by the 1900 and 1910 Colorado census, which lists him as single. The source for the single status of Julia Johnson (from William's marriage to Mahala) is the 1930 Lawrence County, Ohio census in which she is listed as living with her sister Mahala McMahon as Julia Johnson. Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Upper, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: 1827; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 21; Image: 756.0; FHL microfilm: 2341561. The death and burial information comes from her Ohio State Death Certificate, no. 34680. Her birth year seems to be a bit off from the census records. I have used her birth day, but as the informant may not have known her exact age, I have used the birth year from all the census records. Death certificate for Mahala, daughter from William's first marriage, says birth is 28 Feb 1868. This must be incorrect as the census records show that she was the daughter of Mahala and not Serilda, and Mahala was deceased in 1868. I have used the 28 Feb as her birthday, but used the more logical 1861 (from the census records) as her birth year. Dates for William's first wife, Mahala, are from headstone in Ross cemetery, Lawrence Co, Ohio. Sources for the death dates of children of Mahala and William- Emily, Welcome, and Sara- are from headstones in the Ross cemetery, Lawrence Co, Ohio. The source for the aft 1930 death of Mahala Johnson McMahon and bef. 1930 death of Nicholas McMahon is the 1930 Lawrence County, Ohio census. Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Upper, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: 1827; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 21; Image: 756.0; FHL microfilm: 2341561. The source for the marriage of Welcome Johnson and Margaret Hammond is the Lawrence County, Ohio Marriage Book 12, p. 364.
