Note: zation papers in the Lehigh County, Pennsylvania Courthouse: Jacob Rothman - Declaration of Intent: D646 (7 May 1847) Petition: D799 (3 Sep.1849) (Note: This was incorrectly indexed. It should be entered as P799.) The source for his birth date is Schmitshausen, Geburtsregister, 1819.10.16, Birth certificate for Jacob, son of Jacob Rottmann. The source for the baptismal date is from the Evangelical Church records of Rieschweiler. The data relating to Jacob's marriage to Susanna Weaver and the information on Susanna's mother is from the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Lehigh County, Pennsylvania census: 1860: Catasauqua Borough, Lehigh Co., PA Family #591 Jacob Rottman, 37, stone mason, real estate: $1,000, personal: $250, b. Bavaria Susan Rottman, 33, b. PA Elizabeth Weaver, 69, b. PA 1870: Catasauqua Borough, Lehigh Co., PA Family #222 (incorrectly entered as #221) Jacob Rottman, 51, stone mason, real estate: $2,000, personal: $200, b.Bavaria, father of foreign birth, mother of foreign birth, male citizen of US Susan Rottman, 45, keeping house, b. PA Elizabeth Rottman, 78, mother, b. PA (Note: Elizabeth is most likely the mother of Susan Rottman, making Susan’s maiden name Weaver as reported for Elizabeth in the 1860 Federal Census. The entry of Rottman as Elizabeth’s surname is probably an error.) 1880: First Ward Catasauqua, Lehigh Co., PA Family #128 Second Street Jacob Rutman, 61, stone mason, b.Germany, father b. Germany, mother b.Germany Susanna Rutman, 55, wife, keeping house, b. PA, father b. PA, mother b.PA The source for Jacob's death is from the following entry from the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Public Library’s newspaper abstracts. The following entry was found: “Bethlehem Daily Times” Name: Rothman, Jacob Beckel Index: Drowned December 17, 1881 in Catasauqua; F.& A. M.; survived by wife. This data is confirmed by the Estate Papers of Jacob Rottmann. The only difference is that, on looking at the original, the date of death is listed as 15 December, not 17 December as in the newspaper extract above. Perhaps there was a mistranscription when the newspaper extracts were indexed. I use the date of death as 15 December, 1881. Source Citation: Probate Records, 1812-1920; Index, 1812-1965; Author: Lehigh County (Pennsylvania). Register of Wills; Probate Place: Lehigh, Pennsylvania Source Information: Ancestry.com. Pennsylvania, Wills and Probate Records, 1683-1993 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2015. Original data: Pennsylvania County, District and Probate Courts. There is a FindaGrave.com citation for John Jacob Rottmann with a photograph of his headstone. This stone, which may have been created later, gives a birth date of Sept 17, 1819, but an incorrect death date of 1882. The transcription from the photo is 15 Oct 1882, but that is not dependable as the date is not clear on the photo and looks unclear if viewed in person. Based on the Estate Papers cited above the 1882 date is wrong. "Aged 63y 1m 28d" is inscribed, which may also be wrong. The birthdate is wrong when compared with the both birth and baptismal dates from Germany cited above. This is the source for this burial location.
