Note: For the early life of Milton Thomas Rutman see notes under his father. Milton first married, or at least had a child by, Lizzie I Rhoads. The first clue for this relationship is Pennsylvania named Karl Rutman with the father listed as Milton Rutman. The Northampton County Death Register Register #2, p.265 records the following: Karl Rutman, age 18 days; b.2nd Ward, Alliance; d.10 Mar.1906, 2nd Ward, Alliance; cause of death: pneumonia; buried: Allen Union Cemetery on 13 Mar.1906; father: Milton Rutman. Upon finding this two week old infant's Pennsylvania State Death Certificate no. 23780 we find the father's name was Milton Rutman and the mother's Lizzie I Rhoads. This document is the source for the birth, death, and burial information for Carl Rutman. Lizzie sadly did not live to see her two week old infants death as she died seven days after giving birth from, as stated on her death certificate, peritonitis and exhaustion. This death certificate states that she was single, which was the reason I stated above that Milton 'first married, or at least had a child by, Lizzie I Rhoads.' Her Pennsylvania State Death Certificate no. 13586 is the source for the name of her parents and her birth, death, and burial information. Her headstone can be viewed at FindaGrave.com online. I suspect Milton left Pennsylvania and moved west (married to Lizzie or not) to remove himself from the grief. The source for the reconstruction of the second family of Milton Rutman is the 1910, 1920, and 1930 California census. Milton married Edith Walton abt 1910. They are found on the 1910 census in Sacramento with son Melvin Rutman. Melvin is incorrectly given the surname Rutman, as he is Milton's stepson, Melvin Zeis, by a previous marriage of Edith's (see below). This is the source for the birth information on Melvin and the year of Milton and Eda's marriage. Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Sacramento Ward 8, Sacramento, California; Roll: T624_93; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 0125; FHL microfilm: 1374106. Milton and 'Eda' are on the 1920 and 1930 California census with their two daughters, Idella and Alberta. These census records are the source for the birth years and nativity of Eda and the daughters. Source Citation: Year: 1920; Census Place: Sacramento Assembly District 14, Sacramento, California; Roll: T625_126; Page: 4A; Enumeration District: 106; Image: 576. Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Sacramento, Sacramento, California; Roll: 186; Page: 4B; Enumeration District: 0065; Image: 381.0; FHL microfilm: 2339921. Edith (Eda) had an equally colorful marital history to Milton's. Eda May Walton first married Theodore C Zeis in Shasta County, California in 1899. Shasta County Genealogical Society, comp.. Birth and death data have not been searched for Charles MacArthur. These first two marriages of Ediths' ended in divorce. Certificates have not been searched for but Theodore Zeis is found on the 1930 Shasta County census with second wife, Agnes, and his son by Edith, Melvin Zeis. Charles has been married for 5 years to another person on the 1910 census and died Feb 26, 1952 and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Sacramento. But back to this family: The source for the birth and death dates and location for Milton is the California Death Index Source Citation: Place: Sacramento; Date: 26 May 1940; Social Security: 553092855. Further information on Milton Rutman comes from his obituary in the Sacramento Bee dated May 27, 1940: MILTON T. RUTMAN Last rites for Milton T. He was the grandfather of J. Milton Rutman. The source for the bef. 1940 death date of Eda Rutman is from the 1940 California census, in which Milton is listed as a widower. Another source for her maiden name is the California Death Index record of her daughter Alberta Lucille, Source Citation: Place: Shasta; Date: 8 Jan 1995; Social Security: 553098248. CHILDREN: The source for the married name and child of Alberta Rutman Terwilliger is the 1940 California census, in which she is listed as widowed. The source for the death of Alberta Lucille Rutman Terwilliger Murray is the California Death Index Source Citation: Place: Shasta; Date: 8 Jan 1995; Social Security: 553098248, in which her mother's maiden name as Walton and her father's surname as Rutman. Lucille's California Birth Index also lists her mother's maiden name as Walton and her father's surname as Rutman (Source Information: Ancestry.com. California Birth Index, 1905-1995 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005. Original data: State of California. California Birth Index, 1905-1995. Sacramento, CA, USA: State of California Department of Health Services, Center for Health Statistics). The source for the marriage of Alberta and Henry is the unsourced entry on a Public Member Family Tree on Ancestry.com of sandrashelton258. The source for the birth and death dates of Alberta and Henry are their respective records on the Social Security Death Index. The original source for finding the spouse of Idelle was a mention of her in the obituary of her father, Milton Thomas Rutman, in which she is listed as Mrs. idelle Werner. Idelle and Julian T Warner are living in Sacramento on the 1940 census. "United States Census, 1940," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K94R-7SP : accessed 27 Nov 2013), Idelle M Warner in household of Julian T Warner, Area A, Sacramento, Sacramento Judicial Township, Sacramento, California, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 34-63, sheet 62A, family 289, NARA digital publication of T627, roll 282. The spelling of Idelle's name is variously Idella and Idelle. Her married name is spelled Werner in her father's obituary and Warner on the 1940 census. As Julian's death information on the SS Death Index, and both his and Idelle's headstone reads Werner, I have used that spelling. The source for the exact birth and death dates for Idelle was found on VitalSearch online under California Deaths. She is listed as Idelle Moreau Rutman Morris, born 8-25-1913 died in San Francisco on 11-24-2000. Father Rutman and mother Walton. Her name is listed as Idelle Moreau Morris on her headstone in the Masonic Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, Sacramento, California, Plot: Sec A Lot 627 Gr 5. There is an inscription which reads "Inscription: Beloved Mother, Sister an Aunt." She must have remarried after the 1953 death of Julian Warner.
