a. Note: rom a 2010 correspondence with researcher Dick Musselman:
"After discovering Mary Koch was the second wife of your Joseph Freyman, I made a quick search of Federal Census records. This provided some confusing information. In 1850, a 30 year old Mary Koch is living with the George Koch family in Hanover Township, Lehigh Co. The sequence of the entries appear to list her as either a possible wife to 27 year old Aaron Koch or a possible daughter of George and Elizabeth Koch, both 52. The three lines following her entry list Levi Koch 4, Samuel Koch 2 and Sarah Ann Koch 7 months. I suspect, based on knowing that Levi appears in later Deed Books as a son of Mary's, she was the wife of Aaron, and Koch was her married surname." (See complete file held by Neil Rutman for further information on Mary). This census is the source for Mary's first marriage to Aaron, her birth year, and the birth year and location of Aaron, and the 'bef. 1846' marriage is based on the age of the oldest child in the following census:

This census record indicates that Mary's birth year was abt 1820. Her birth year is indicated (perhaps more honestly) as 1812 on the 1880 census as a widow. She can be found on this census living next door to Emmanuel Leffler, son in law, in Catasauqua. "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWNQ-7H8 : accessed 26 November 2015), Emanuel Leffler, Catasauqua, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district 184, sheet 221D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1146; FHL microfilm 1,255,146.

This is the source for the date and location of the marriage and the record indicates that Mary's maiden name was probably ALSO Koch. After consulting the original document, in which the groom's surnames are in one column and the bride's maiden names in another, all the bride's maiden names are clearly indicated and different from the surname of the groom. Mary's maiden name is also indicated which is clearly Koch.
The source for the second marriage of Joseph Freyman to the married Mary Koch is the German newspaper "Der Friedens Bote" of Northampton County, PA, 22 Jan 1862.
