Notes
a. Note:   . WALTHER, OR WALTER, WAS BORN IN BAVARIA WITH THE SURNAME ROTTMANN, OCCASIONALLY SPELLED ROTHMANN. WALTER SIGNED HIS NAME ROTTMAN ON HIS 1838 DECLARATION OF INTENT TO APPLY FOR U.S. CITIZENSHIP, AND APPEARS AS WALTER ROTMAN ON THE 1850 PENNSYLVANIA CENSUS. FROM THE 1860 CENSUS AND ONWARD THE SPELLING OF THE FAMILY NAME IS RUTMAN.
  PARENTS:
The initial sources for the reconstruction of this family are the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Northampton Co census. Greenwood Cemetery, Howerton, Northampton, Pennsylvania records were consulted for death and birthdates of Walter and Mary Rutman, and the source for birthdate of Mary Musick is from her headstone in the Greenwood Cemetery in Howerton. The source for the maiden name of Musick for Mary is the 1906 Pennsylvania death certificate of her son, John Rutman, and the close confirmation in the Christ Lutheran and Reformed Church records which list an 1836 marriage of a Walter Rydman to a May Masic. The source for the middle initial of Mary A. Musick is from Walter Rutman's will. Some sources have it as M. or Magdalena. She used M. after she was married, which probably stood for Musick, and the middle name of Magdalena has no documentation.
The birthplace of Walter Rutman have long been held in our family to be Baden-Wurttemberg, due to Baden being listed is his birthplace in the 1880 census and Wurttemberg being listed in the 1870 census. A family tradition also held that his birth village was Ludwigshafen, which is found in both Baden and Wurttemberg. This false family tradition and incorrect information entered on the two census records was clarified upon finding The Declaration of Intent and Petition for citizenship of "Walther Rathman" in the Lehigh County, Pennsylvania Clerk of Courts Office. The Declaration of Intent and Petition papers, dated 3 Dec, 1838 and 3 Dec, 1840 state that he gave up his allegiance to the King of Bavaria, had embarked from the French port of Havre de Grace, and was born in Smithshausen in Bavaria. This is an anglicization of Schmitshausen, Bavaria. His name is spelled variously Walter Rathmann, Walther Ruthmann, and Walter Ruthman by the clerks, but signed himself Walter Rottman in 1838 and 1840.
  CHILDREN:
The death dates of John and Sarah Rutman come from their death certificates.
Marriage dates of children from correspondence with Mrs Norman Rutman of Bethlehem, PA in the 1980's and marriage register, Courthouse, Allentown, PA.
Further documentation for the deaths of the children are:
Allen H. are the Northampton County Register of Wills, Estate file 29529. Further documentation for the death of Allen H is the Easton Sentinel/Express July 18, 1930. His place and date of burial is from his Pennsylvania State death certificate.
The death date of William H. Rutman (he committed suicide by shooting himself) is from the Easton Sentinel 30 June, 1885 found in the Marx Room of the Easton Public Library. William may have had a first wife by the name of Martha. Needs further research.
The source for the birth, death, burial, and location of Walter's wife Margaret and Walter's middle initial is the Easton Sentinel/Express 13 May 1949. Source of Walter's death is the US Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles from History of Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-1865-History of the 153 regiment, written by Rev.R.W. Kiefer and published in 1909. It lists Walter Rutman as being 22 years old when he mustered in on 7 Oct.1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 2 May 1863 and died 15 Jul.1890. He did receive a pension.
The sources for the marriage of Edwin are from the Argus Extracts held in the Marx Room of the Easton Public Library, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and the 1880 Northampton County, Pennsylvania census.
The death and birth dates of Sarah Ann Rutman are from her obituary in the Easton Express 14 March, 1923 which lists her birth and death dates, marriage to John Roberts, children, and her parents Walter and Mary. The death dates for Monroe and Thomas-after 1923- comes from this obituary, as they are listed as living at the time of Sarah's death. Her burial date and place is from her Pennsylvania State death certificate, which states that at time of her death in 1923 she was a widow. The date and place of birth of husband John Roberts is from the 1900 Pennsylvania census. Their marriage date is of some controversy. On the 1860 census John and Sarah have three children, the oldest of whom, Mary H., was born in 1857. However, the 1900 Pennsylvania census states that John and Sarah had been married for 40 years which would have them married in 1860 at which time Mary H. was three. Assuming that entry was an "about 40 years" entry in the 1900 census, I have put their marriage at abt. 1856.
The source for the marriage, names and dates of the family of Monroe Rutman is from the 1900 Pennsylvania census, North Whitehall, Lehigh, District 46, Image 3. The source for the name, deathdate and burial place of Monroe's wife, Mary Moser, and the deathdate and burial place of Monroe is from his greatgranddaughter, June Giancarlo, sent in an email June 26, 2012.
The source for the family of Thomas Rutman is the 1900 Pennsylvania census report for Allen, Northampton, Pennsylvania, District 94, Image 46. The first son is listed as being born in June of 1880 and was 19 years old, and the report states they had been married 19 years, which technically would be 1881, but I have listed the marriage as 1880.
Further research found the marriage date listed here in the Argus Extracts held in the Marx Room of the Easton Public Library, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Either way the first son was born on the tails of the marriage. The same 1900 census lists the wife Mary as having 3 living children, but having given birth to 4. The name and gender of the 4th child is yet to be discovered and is listed as such on this PAF file and on new.familysearch.
The sources for the burial of Thomas are the records of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Northampton, Pennsylvania.
Note:   THIS IS THE GENERATION IN WHICH THE SPELLING OF THE FAMILY NAME CHANGES
