Notes
a. Note:   E. I HAVE SIMPLY COPIED FROM BOOK SOURCES WITHOUT GOING TO MANY PRIMARY SOURCES, YET COMPARED AND VERIFIED WITH SOURCES BELOW WHEN SOMETHING LOOKED UNRELIABLE. IF THERE WERE ANY OTHER CHILDREN, AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN DUE TO SOME GAPS IN YEARS, THEY DIED IN INFANCY AND THEIR RECORDS, IF EVER KEPT, NEVER SURVIVED. THE CHILDREN ARE APPROXIMATELY IN THE CORRECT ORDER, BUT THE LAST FOUR MAY BE LESS SO.
The initial source for the construction of this family is the following entry on RootsWeb's WorldConnect
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=nlambert1&id=I02640. Minor corrections and modifications have been made based on dates listed in 1850, 60, and 70 census reports from Lawrence Co, Ohio. Jo Martin's research has been invaluable. Her Martin files can be had by e mailing jomartin01@msn.com.
  PARENTS:
Confirmation that the family of Benjamin Martin, which originated in Bedford Co, Virginia ended up in Lawrence County Ohio is from the 1820 to1850 Lawrence, Ohio census report. Son William and his family, of whom I have known for decades, is listed on the 1850 census as living in Lawrence township. On the same page, living right next door to William Martin, is father Benjamin Martin age 84 (listed as born 1766 in Virginia) living with his grandson, Allen Wilson (son of Henry Wilson and Sarah Martin). In the 1820 census we have John, Benjamin Jr. (Windsor township) and David (Mason). The 1830 census has Benjamin Sr, Otis, and William, as Benjamin Jr. appears to have moved on toward Illinois. In the 1840 census William, Benjamin, David, John, and Welcome appear, as well as daughter Sarah Wilson, who was likely in the county since her marriage to Henry Wilson in 1813. Welcome died in March, 1850 the source for that being the US Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index for Lynder, Lawrence, Ohio. The date for his birth on this document is 1802, and the gender is listed incorrectly as female, though Welcome is a male name, and the occupation listed is "Farmer". All these facts clearly indicate the removal of most of the family from birth and origin in Bedford, Virginia to Lawrence, Ohio, probably between 1800 and 1810. Due to the uncertainty as to when the family moved from Virginia to Ohio the births of Elizabeth, Welcome, and Otis would be uncertain if it were not for the US Federal Census Mortality Schedule Index on which I found the death of Welcome Martin in 1850. This lists him as being born in Virginia. I have used Lee County, Virginia County for the births for Elizabeth and Welcome-the same given by Roots Web for Otis- as it may have been that place in which the family resided on their onward journey north. Nancy's birth was listed as Ohio on the RootsWeb's WorldConnect, but she is listed as being born in Virginia on the 1850 Lawrence Co, census. Her husband, David P. Freeman's birth info is extracted from the 1850 and 1870 Lawrence Co. census.
Have (from Agnes-adonn4life@aol.com) 1792 Land deed that shows Joseph Simmons and his wife, Agatha, Sarah, wife of Edward Beard and Judith, wife of Benjamin Martin selling land they inherited from father Robert Walker in a will dated 1766. This establishes a father for Judith and relationship between Benjamin and Judith.
The source for the marriage of Benjamin and Judith is Source Information:
Dodd, Jordan. Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1660-1800 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1997. Original data: Dodd, Jordan, comp.. Virginia Marriages to 1800. Electronic transcription of marriage records held by the individual counties in Virginia.
  Name: Benj. Martin
 Spouse: Judith Walker
 Marriage Date: 17 Mar 1792
 Marriage Location: Franklin County, Virginia
  CHILDREN:
The Roots Website (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/) lists Otis as being born in 1802 without source and Welcome as 1807. The US Census Mortality Schedule Index says Welcome died in Mar of 1850 at age 48 (it lists him as a farmer who died of ulceration), which puts his birth at abt. 1802, and lists the death of Otis as Dec 1850 at age 49 (it lists him as a farmer who died of brain fever), which would put the birth of Otis around 1801. Welcome is, incidentally, incorrectly entered as a female on this record. The source for this is: Jackson, Ron V., Accelerated Indexing Systems, comp.. U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1999. Original data: Compiled and digitized by Mr. Jackson and AIS from microfilmed schedules of the U.S. Federal Decennial Census, territorial/state censuses, and/or census substitutes.
As Welcome died in 1850 we cannot assess his age from an 1850 census, so I have given Welcome the age of the Mortality Index and adjusted Otis one year earlier to maintain his approximate date of birth and the order listed on Roots Web (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/). On that site John and Sarah are listed as born only in Virginia, so the county is in doubt. I have listed the county of their birth as Lee, which was a pivotal county in the families move northward, and was the birth county of Otis listed on Roots Web. Whether they were in fact born in Lee County or a neighboring county remains to be discovered.
Some have added a daughter, Rebecca, to this family, born in 1823, but this would have made mother Judith about 51 at the time of her birth. Rebecca was Rebecca Nance, Benjamin's grandaughter in law, who married Allen Wilson in 1843, and with whom Benjamin Martin was found living in 1850. (See source under William Martin). Rebecca is also erroneously listed on Ancestry.com as the second child of William Martin b. 1794. She was a Nance.
Source for the marriages of sons William, John, Otis, and Welcome is the Marriage Book, Lawrence County. Source for the second marriage of Otis Whitrock Martin to Elizabeth Walls is the Lawrence County, Ohio Marriage Book 4, pg 129. Sources for the marriage of daughter Nancy comes from Lawrence County, Ohio Marriage Book 1-3, pg 123. Connecting Benjamin's daughter Nancy with the Nancy on this marriage certificate is based on strong circumstantial evidence. It is based on the fact that the family had a daughter named Nancy, that this is the only Nancy Martin married in Lawrence County at the traditional age for a woman to wed, and that the population of Lawrence County in this era was still somewhat sparse.
Source for the marriages of Benjamin's children, David and Sarah is Original data: Gallia County, Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900. County court records located at Gallipolis, Ohio or Family History Library microfilm #0317655-0317658.
Sarah Martin is listed on the RootsWeb World Connect (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/)as being born in 1794 but both the 1850 and 1880 Lawrence Census records give her age as 54 and 73 respectively which puts her birth around 1796. An independent source for the death of Sarah Martin Wilson is from Ohio, Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F6JJ-6P6 : accessed 12 Dec 2012), Sallie Wilson, 07 Sep 1891. indexing project (batch) number: B07039-7 </search/records/index> system origin: Ohio-EASy source film number: 317745 reference number: v 3 w. The discovery of this record, which lists her age at death as 105, is noteworthy. It suggests her birth year is around 1786, which would put it 6 years prior to the marriage of Benjamin Martin and Judith Walker. Either the informant at her death was incorrect or exaggerating, or her parents, Benjamin and Judith, had children prior to their formal marriage, a custom not uncommon in backwoods 18th century Virginia. I have left Sarah's birth at my original 1796-97 choice, based on the ordering of other researchers.
