Note: NOTHER CHILD BORN BETWEEN WILLIAM AND ANNA MARIAH, WHO DIED BEFORE THE 1850 CENSUS, AND FOR WHOM NO BAPTISM RECORDS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN NORTHAMPTON COUTY. The source for the reconstruction of this family is the 1850 New Jersey census, at which time they lived in Knowlton, Warren, New Jersey. PARENTS: The source for the birthdate, location, and baptism for Jacob Andreas Ludwig is from the Moravian Bethlehem Church Register. My files contain much data on the first appearances (1839-1840) of Jacob A. Ludwig in Northampton County. The only appearance on the census records for this family is the 1850 Warren County, New Jersey census. Their location in New Jersey was evidently a temporary and recent move, as all the children with the exception of Susan were, according to the census record, born in Pennsylvania, and they later returned to Northampton County. Indirect proof of this is son Lafayette's being mustered for the Civil War from Northampton County. Children James, William, and Ann Mariah are all found living back in Northampton County singly on the 1860 census. The source for the "after June 1851" date of death for both Jacob and Esther (Hester) is the Lehigh County Miscellaneous Deed Bk #5, pp. 60-61, which is the last written record I have been able to find for them. The maiden name of Hester/Ester has been very elusive. As of May 2011, no marriage record for Jacob A. Ludwig and bride Hester has been found, though only a few Church records have been searched in Northampton County. They could be more thoroughly searched, as well as those in Lehigh County. Although her children William, Lafayette, Joseph, and Susan died before required state death certificate registration, which would have included the mother's maiden name, James and Anna Mariah died after state registration was required. Sadly, the name of their mother is left blank on both of their certificates. The last chance was finding Daniel's death certificate. Upon locating it in Delaware County, New York, it frustratingly lists only the father's first name as Andrew (a corruption of Andreas from Jacob Andreas), and all else, including name and birthplace of mother, is blank. In 2015 Hester's daughter, Anna Mariah is found on the 1885 New Jersey census with husband James R Harris. "New Jersey State Census, 1885," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6B2Q-ZMM : accessed 15 November 2015), James R Harris, Blairstown, Warren, New Jersey; citing p. 49, Department of State, Trenton; FHL microfilm 888,642. Of interest is the residence in the household of a Hester Hunter, over age 60. This is most likely Anna Mariah's mother after a second marriage. More research is necessary here to fill out this Hester's history. Name Hester Hunter Event Type Census Event Year 1885 Event Place Blairstown, Warren, New Jersey Gender Female Age Range Over 60 years James R Harris M Annie M Harris F Hester Harris F Hester Hunter F As of 2016 the research of Dick Musselman found nothing post 1885 regarding this Hester Hunter in either Warren or Northampton counties. See notes under Hester Harris for full report. CHILDREN: Source for the middle initial, death and burial dates of James J. Ludwig was the Easton Sentinal/Express obituary, July 8th and 10th, 1922. Easton semi weekly Argus of 9 Aug, 1878 lists the marriage of Annie M. Ludwig of Portland, formerly of Easton, PA to James R. Harris of Blairstown on 1 Aug, 1879 in the home of James Ludwig. Having the marriage at the home of James Ludwig, a brother with whom she had lived at the time of the 1860 and 1870 census, connected this Anna Ludwig with my Anna Ludwig. Her death and burial information come from the New Jersey death certificate of Anna M Harris. The source of the family of William Ludwig is from the 1870 PA census, Roll M593-1383, page 438a, image 376. The source for the death of William Ludwig is from the Easton, Pennsylvania semi weekly newspaper, Argus, which states "William Ludwig - Died at Slateford (Upper Mount Bethel), April 30, 1877, aged 42 yrs., 9 mo., 28 days..." In the Reformed Cemetery in Stone Church (Upper Mt. Bethel) this William is buried...born July 2, 1834. The source for the death and birthdates of Anna M Ludwig is her obituary in the Belvedere Apollo (Warren County, New Jersey), Mar 4, 1904 pg. 3, col 1. Daniel Ludwig appears on the 1860 census as an apprentice potter living with another family next door to brother William and wife, and sister Ann. Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: Upper Mount Bethel, Northampton, Pennsylvania; Roll M653_1148; Page: 1079; Image: 482; Family History Library Film: 805148. The 1860 whereabouts of parents Jacob and Hester remains a mystery. As the children are living with each other and one minor is apprenticed out, Jacob and Hester may have both died before 1860. Daniel subsequently appears on the 1870 census in Northumblerland County, Pennsylvania as a miller (it should be remembered that his father, Jacob Andreas, was a miller by trade), and born in 1845. Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Milton, Northumberland, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1384; Page: 41B; Image: 87; Family History Library Film: 552883. Daniel appears again in the 1880 census living as a border in the home of Richard Phipps. This is almost certainly the same Daniel, as his birthdate is 1845, there are no other Daniel Ludwigs close to that age in the 1880 census report born in Pennsylvania, and he has kept the occupation of miller, the same as his father, Jacob. Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Damascus, Wayne, Pennsylvania; Roll: 1202; Family History Film: 1255202; Page: 117B; Enumeration District: 8; . He is found in Delaware County, New York in the 1910 census married to Mary B. Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Masonville, Delaware, New York; Roll: T624_935; Page: 13A; Enumeration District: 0023; Image: 722; FHL Number: 1374948. His birthdate is 1845, he is born in Pennsylvania and occupation is that of miller. Of interest is the age difference of 17 years between wife Mary and Daniel. When Daniel appeared on the 1880 census as a border in the home of Richard Phipps there was a servant, Mary Hiller, also residing in the home. Her age is listed as 17 years younger than Daniel. At first I was reticent to connect his wife, Mary B., from the 1910 census (who is 17 years younger than Daniel) with Mary Hiller from the 1880 census. Upon finding a marriage record for a Mary B Hiller to Daniel Ludwig from Meg Bramwell on newFamilysearch.org, I have entered her name here as Mary B Hiller. Daniel's date and location of death is from his New York State death certificate. The informant was Mrs. Mary Ludwig, his occupation was miller, and the father's name was listed as Andrew Ludwig, using the modern form of Jacob's middle name, Andreas. As with his siblings death certificates, the name of the mother, Hester, was also left blank. Evidently, Hester had been forgotten by that time. The date for Susan's birth comes from the civil birth records of Warren County, New Jersey compiled by Brenda Miller at http://www.raub-and-more.com/docs/warrenbirths/awarrenbirths.html. Susan and Joseph's death dates come from Old Union Cemetery, Stone Church, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The inscriptions on the stones from the Old Union Cemetery, Stone Church, Northampton County, Pa. for both Joseph and Susan reads: Susanna died on January 14, 1851, age 1 year, 5 months & 25 days & was the daughter of Jacob & Esther Ludwig. Joseph died 11 days later on January 25, 1851, age 2 years, 6 months & 12 days, & was the son of Jacob & Esther Ludwig.
Note: DUE TO THE GAP IN BIRTH YEARS, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A
