Note: Note the 1901 Bay of the Islans Census states George's date of birth as April 6 1837. daughter of George, then listed as Lucy Alice in 1881 Census for "Nicumteouch", Halifax Co, NS, as follows: George WORTHEN M Male English 42 Nova Scotia Fisherman Church of England Caroline Lucy WORTHEN M Female German 40 Nova Scotia Church of England Lucy Alice WORTHEN Female English 18 Nova Scotia Church of England Eliza Ann WORTHEN Female English 17 Nova Scotia Church of England Francis WORTHEN Female English 15 Nova Scotia Church of England Emma Jane WORTHEN Female English 12 Nova Scotia Church of England Margret WORTHEN Female English 10 Nova Scotia Church of England William Howard WORTHEN Male English 8 Nova Scotia Church of England George Thomas WORTHEN Male English 5 Nova Scotia Church of England John WORTHEN Male English 3 Nova Scotia Church of England By 1891, add Herbert, b. @1881, and Edward, b. @1885. >From NS VR site: George William Worthen, b. @1838, Mitchells Bay, ???, d. of Brights Disease, on 12-Sep-1918, at Nicum Teouch, Halifax Co, NS. He was buried in St John's Cemetery, in Necum Touch (or however it's actually spelled). Francis (dau), b. 01-Apr-1866, Necum Teuch, Halifax Co. on her birth record, shows Caroline and George married in 1861 at Ecum Secum, Guysborough. Perhaps Emma is the unnamed child, b. "Necum Cheugh" on 18-Nov-1868, which shows Caroline's maiden name as Smith. Again, marriage date listed as 1861, at Necum Cheugh. Likely William is the unnamed male child, b. 07-Jun-1872, Smith's Cove, showing parents as George William Worthen and Caroline Lucy Smith. That account shows their marriage 1861 at Smiths Cove, and an informant as Agusta Smith (likely relation of Caroline's, I guess). Daughter, Eliza Ann, m. John H. Burgoyne, 21-Jan-1889, Smiths Cove, Halifax Co. Son, Edward, m. Hattie Grey, 13-Apr-1908, at Dartmouth, Halifax Co. Daughter, Margaret, died single, aged 29, NS Hospital, on 12-Jun-1909 (29 or 39?) Son, Thomas (George Thomas) married a Catherine, he d. Oct-1919, Halifax City. (b. 04-Dec-1878 by death record). Wife/widow, may have been d/o William DeWolfe Worthen, as one of that name (Katherine Worthen) married Robert Duncan MacDougall, 1926, Halifax. Of Note, and possible relation... in 1871, a Henry Worthen married a Naomi Smith, same geographic area. Henry was son of Thomas and Eliza Worthen, and Naomi was d/o Jacob and Lucy Smith. Did two brothers marry two sisters? IGI at LDS shows: Caroline Lucy Smith, b. @1840, m. George William Worthen, 02-Jan-1862, Smiths Cove, Digby Co, NS (well, so much for accuracy, as should probably be Smiths Cove, Halifax Co). She died, by that account, 30-May-1885, Smiths Cove "Digby". Account also shows DOB for George W. Worthen was 06-Apr-1839, Ecum Secum, Guysborough Co, NS. Further family info: Lucy Alice, b. @1862 Eliza Ann, b. 06-Mar-1864, d. 1927, Port Dufferin, Halifax Co Margaret Caroline, b. 29-Jan-1871 William Howard, b. 07-Jun-1872 Thomas, b. 09-Dec-1875, d. 08-Oct-1919, Halifax City John, b. 16-Jan-1878, Smiths Cove "Digby"... believe this is a recurring error, and mentions of Smiths Cove more correctly would be showing Halifax Co. Edward Henry, b. 12-Mar-1885, d. Feb-1968, Halifax. Another record of marriage in @1861 for the two, shows parents of George William as Bertram Thomas Worthen and Eliza Jewers. Again, these are LDS/IGI and Pedigree Resource File records, so no original sources are shown. After consulting a Halifax area map, seems Ecum Secum, Necum Teuch, and Mitchell Bay, are all right there on the county boundary between Halifax Co and Guysborough Co, right on the shore. Others connected to that area and WORTHEN name found at Sheet Harbour, Watt Section, Port Dufferin and nearby towns. Jared Handspicker Correspondence
