The only tidbits are Born in England, he was a carpenter, and the fact he died in a War Veteran?s Home. This would indicate service in one of the Commonwealth countries. I have checked the Australian records for the First World Record without any luck and he would have been well over the age limit for WW II. It also mentions that he was a widower ? I can find no marriage for a Harry Leighton in NSW or Victoria. I am sure this is your Harry as the above agrees with his Attestation Paper. The cemetery he was buried at is Macquarie Park and they have a database which has the location for Harry?s grave. There is only one female Leighton in the cemetery, Phyllis Vida Leighton; however she married a George Leonard Leighton in 1952 so no wife buried with him. Narrabeen is north of Manly on the Barrenjoey Peninsula and is about 20 miles from the centre of Sydney. The War Veteran?s Home is now a facility run by the RSL (Returned Soldiers League) www.rsllifecare.org.au then select Narrabeen, and is called Anzac Village. I contacted their admin section and they are going to check if any records are available for Harry ? the lady didn?t sound very hopeful, however we will see. The cemetery web site is www.maccem.com.au and then search at the bottom of the list. Cemetery: Macquarie Park NSW Person Id: 3578833 Surname: Leighton Given Names: Harry Interred Date: 25 Feb 1953 Gender: M Portion: RC Row: O5 Plot: 0030 I have checked naturalization records ? nothing We don?t keep census records in Australia!!!! I checked 1936 electoral roles which lists 2 Harry Leightons in northern NSW however as there is no naturalization record it is unlikely that our Harry on these rolls. I checked our National Archives for any War Record or Pension ? nothing I am hoping for a bit more info before I start a detailed shipping search ? nothing shows with a general search. No death notice in the two major Sydney papers, Sydney Morning Herald or Daily Telegraph. -- Sept 25 2008 The cemetery sent the following information: Dear Heather I have checked our records and there is no ne else buried with Harry. The grantee of that grave is the War Vetrans Home where he passed away. They organised his burial. Regards Karen Admin MPCC --- Harry's date of birth on the Attestation Papers for the CEF was given as Oct 10 1875, however it was registered in December 1874 in the UK Birth Indexes on line. I am thinking he may have "lied" about the year of his birth when he first joined the Military forces in England. ----- (Dec 2008) I received this today from a contact I made last week in England... he was at KEW today and wrote this down "incase" it was my Harry... turns out it is my guy :) still have no idea who the wife was but this at least gives me a little more to work on :) " Harry Leighton, born in the Parish of St Johns Peterborough age 18, Carpenter, attested for the 8th Hussars on the 26th Sept 1892, and joined at Norwich on the 30th, no. 3517. He transferred to the 11th Hussars, no. 4196 on the 16th Sept 1898, and to the Army Reserve on 17th Dec 1903, discharged 25th Sept 1904. Served India Egypt and S Africa, awarded QSA with clasps for Cape Colony Orange Free State and Transvaal. Next of kin first given as Father, Daniel St. Leonard St Peterborough, croosed out with deceased 28 Dec 1897 written, then added beneath is Brother Daniel Royal Hotel Peterborough." ---- Hi Heather, Info on QSA below. No registration of Harry as a carpenter with the Unions in NSW. Now I know roughly when he was last in Canada I will try a more detailed search of the inward shipping. There was no specific reason or mass migration to Australia after WW1 that would bring Harry down under. He may have met some Australians while in France as the Canadians and Australians served together in quite a few battles. We shall keep looking. Regards David ----- The Queen's South Africa Medal or QSA ?was awarded to military personnel who served in the Boer War in South Africa between October 11, 1899 and May 31, 1902. Units from the British Army, Royal Navy, colonial forces who took part (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India and South Africa), civilians employed in official capacity and war correspondents. The QSA was the medal issued to all who served in South Africa up to the end of the war in May 1902. Hence they were issued to those like the New Zealand 10th Contingent who arrived in Durban in May 1902, and did no fighting. The requirements for the King's South Africa Medal meant that few were issued ---- In August 2008, much to my surprise I discovered Harry Leighton had at some point come to Canada and served as a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces (CEF) during WW1. Prior to joining the CEF in May 1915 his military records state he worked at a prison in the one of the Canadian Western Provinces... possibly Alberta. (Further investigation is required to do this which I hope to persue during the summer of 2009. I live in a city which has many provincial prisons. When the area Prison museum reopens for the summer I will contact them at that time. ) A copy of Harry's Attestation Papers for the CEF are located on line at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php Just do a search for him at the above address (Harry Leighton) you will note that the next of kin was given as his brother, Daniel Leighton, my 3x great grandfather. At the time Daniel was a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia. This record can be printed off. I also have in my possession a copy of his military records from his time in the CEF. He was hospitalized several times during his 2 years of service. The records I have are 57 pages in length. Harry was injured in WW1 and returned to Canada in November 1917 and discharged as "Medically Unfit" . It is not known when he moved to Australia as of April 2009. ------------------------- Source: Newspaper: The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday February 26 1953, Page 14 The funeral of the late HARRY LEIGHTON of the war Veteran's Home, Narrabeen, will leave Bruce Maurer's Chapel, 281-3 Pacific Highway, near West Street, North Sydney.
