Jay was called Jessie Gertrude Nowell born 17th April 1901 at St Leonard street Peterborough. She married a Reginald Parker and had 4 children. I also found Kay, which i was really excited about as no-one seemed to know much about her. I think i already told you that she wasn't Frederick Nowells daughter and was born to Alice before marriage. Well her real name was Kathleen Annie Leighton born 8th May 1898 in Grimsby. I found her after finding out she was illegitemate and finding Daniel Leightons will naming a Miss K Leighton i knew she must have been born just before his death. I now also know that as a young child she didn't live with Alice but visited a lot and finally came to live with Alice as a young woman. Kathleen lived with a Mr Henry Hitchbone and his wife Rachel in Stanground North hunts. Henry was a railway engine driver. There is no fathers name on Kathleens birth certificate so i'm not sure whether Henry is her father, or part of the family or just a close friend. As he and his wife are registered as having adopted Kathleen but her name always remained as Leighton and like i said she always knew who her real mother was and had a lot to do with her. Kathleen came to live with Alice after Henry and Rachel Hitchbone had died. I also have obtained some information on the Royal Temperance Hotel from the Peterborough Standard Newspaper August 1901. Fred Nowell is listed as the proprietor and the hotel is up for auction with possesion to be given up at Michaelmas. I know that from this address they moved to Chorley Manchester and that is where Florence was born. Fred and Alice became property developers and owned a number of houses and shops which they rented out. The advert for auction of the hotel reads as follows. Royal Temperance Hotel to be sold by auction by Messrs. FOX and VERGETTE Comprising a substantially built house, commodious outbuildings, stables, coach house, stock rooms, two good cellars, etc.. etc.. originally designed for a commercial and family hotel, in which for many years past a large and profitable busuness has been carried on. In close proximity to the great Northern Railway Station. The accomodation includes a large coffee room, commodious kitchens, commercial room, reading room, private rooms, and fourteen bedrooms, bathroom etc.. etc.. let at an annual rental of £60. The greater part of the property is leasehold remainder freehold. Also the hotel was renamed the royal temperance hotel by Daniel Leighton when he took possesion, before that it was just called the royal hotel. At the auction the hotel was purchased by a Ellen Fuller who ran the hotel until 1913 when it was compulsory purchased. It was purchased by the great northern railway because it was in the immediate area of disturbance caused by the building of Crescent bridge (carrying Thorpe road over the railway). The hotel was not demolished immediatly, although most of its access was cut off, but became railway company offices until mid-late 1960's when it was finally demolished. Sara -------------- The City Temperance Hotel was on Narrow Street (presently known as Bridge Street) but a gas leak in November 1936 caused a massive explosion. The damage was severe and even though the hotel was repaired, it never fully recovered. The history of Bridge Street is truly fascinating and tells us much about the development of Peterborough. --------- Thought you might be interested in the info below which I received from the Peterborough Crematorium regarding Daniel Leighton 1835 - 1897 & Mary Ann (Proctor) Leighton 1840-1896 - "According to our records both Mary Ann and Daniel Leighton were buried in the same grave at Broadway Cemetery. It appears that they were buried in Section 4, second division, grave number 329. I have also checked the records of our local Family History Society which they took from headstone inscriptions in Broadway Cemetery, and there is another name recorded on the Leighton headstone - Nellie Leighton. I have checked our burial records and found that Nellie Leighton, who was listed on the headstone as the daughter of Daniel and Mary Ann, died aged 7 months 25/7/1878. It appears that although Nellie was not buried with her parents, she is buried in the same section - 4, grave number 2393D" Source: Marcia Noble February 2011 Correspondence. email: noblesmm@gmail.com ----- Jennifer Pantall Nov 6 at 11:28 AM Hi Heather Now my family have returned home to Bishop’s Stortford I have been able to look up my records. I have the relevant pages from the census from 1841 to 1901. Ann Proctor b.1800 m. John Proctor a druggist their daughter Mary Ann b.1840 m. Daniel Leighton around June 1862. In the 1861 census she was a draper’s widow called either Eeles or Edes with a son John aged 1year. Daniel Leighton is down as a Commercial traveller in the 71, 81 & 91 censuses. Mary Ann is down as Hotel keeper for the Temperance Hotel in Peterborough in 1891 with my grandmother Alice Ann as cook. In the 1901 census mu grandfather Frederick Nowell is down as head of the household & hotel proprietor & railway contractor’s cashier with Alice as manageress & Louisa 1year. My mother was born there April 1901. My grandfather was cut off by his family as he had married someone 11 years his senior who had an illegitimate child - Kathleen Ann Leighton born 1899 in Lincolnshire on the 1911 census she is down as their adopted daughter & later changed her name by deed poll to Nowell. I have the following Leighton children but don’t know anything about any of them. Alice, Jessie,Catherine, Daniel, Mary, Robert, Edith, Charles, Henry Florence & William. My mother used to talk about her Aunty Polly & I know used to stay with cousins in Harborne Birmingham. The photo I am going to scan was taken in 1896 after their mother’s funeral. My grandmother is at the back & according to what my mother has written on the back Edith is on her right & Florence on her left. Front row L to R Jessie, Kitty,& Polly I hope that this isn’t too confusing. Jennifer Source: Jennifer Pantall November 6 2013 Jennifer Pantall <jbpantall@gmail.com>
