Note:   By 1831 Isaac Sumner and his family settled in Cass County, Michigan, along with the family of Elihu Davis who were also Quakers and descend from the Davis line of Nantucket Island. Isaac founded Sumnerville and claimed 16 patents to land in the counties of Cass, Kalamazoo, Van Buren, and Berrien. Alexander B. Davis, the son of Elihu Davis, was the first merchant in Sumnerville and a township clerk; he married Isaac's daughter Amy "Milly" Sumner in 1833. Thereafter, Isaac returned to Wayne County, Indiana and his son in law Alexander Davis moved west to California. Isaac Sumner married second, the widow Rachel (Swain) Thornburg. According to newpaper articles Sumner descendants continued to live in Michigan, especially in the environs of Dowagiac. Gilbert is one of the Cass County families that are related.
Quaker MM records indicate Isaac Sumner was born 2 Jun 1793, but his monument indicates that he was born 22 Jul 1793 [78 yrs, 3 mo, 18 days, and died 9 Nov 1871].
