Notes
a. Note:   H32
Note:   Jane Katherine McAuslan is the daughter of Peter H. McAuslan born in Glasgow, Scotland, January 30, 1824, died December 21, 1908 in Sutter County, California, and Agnes Wallace (a legendary name in the history of Scotland) born May 3, 1829 in Strathblane, Sterling, Scotland, died 1900 in Sutter County, California.
While living in the Mormon settlement of Spanish Fork Peter McAuslan learned that it was the Saints and not the Indians who had slaughtered the members of the Baker-Fancher train at Mountain Meadows on September 11, 1857. His faith in the LDS church had never been strong and he was shaken by the horrific crime. In June of 1859 he was able to escape with his wife and children under the protection of an Army escort and they made their way to California and safety. See page 215, Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows by Will Bagley (2002), and the obituary for Peter McAuslan in The Sutter County Farmer, December 25, 1908. In addition, the end notes include an article written by Polly Aird, a descendant of Peter McAuslan, Escape from Zion: The United States Army Escort of Mormon Apostates, 1859, Nevada Historical Society Quarterly, Vol. 44, No. 3 (Fall 2001), pp 196-237.
