Notes
a. Note:   H35
Note:   According to the records of the General Land Office on October 23,1855, when 21 years of age Hugh Johnson declared that he entered upon 80 acres of land in Township 33 North, Range 6 East, in Sections 8 and 9. On September 17, 1856, Daniel Boone Sinclair signed an affidavit that Hugh Johnson had entered the land and built a dwelling house, smoke house, made other improvements, and had sixteen acres under cultivation. Daniel Boone Sinclair was a relative by marriage and was the brother of William Ashley Sinclair, the husband of Willie Ellen Johnson who was a first cousin once removed to Hugh Johnson. Daniel B. Sinclair’s wife was Melvina Graham. Willie Ellen Johnson Sinclair is the daughter of Noble Johnson and his second wife Margaret Pinkerton.
Hugh Johnson served as a 1st Lieutenant Company G of the Militia of Madison County, according to Civil War Soldiers of Madison County, Missouri. However, records obtained from the National Archives as well as the Missouri State Archives establish that Hugh Johnson accepted a commission to serve for the Confederacy as a 1st Lieutenant and was sought by the Provost Marshal General, St. Louis, as an officer for the Rebels. After the conclusion of hostilities following General Lee's surrender, Hugh Johnson was in Fort Craig, New Mexico, where he took an Oath of Allegiance.
