Note: H39
Note: Constant Johnson was born (1790-1800 according to the census data) about 1793 in Lancaster County, South Carolina, and appears to have died prior to 1840 in Jackson County, Arkansas. It is believed that he married about 1821 and his wife is the widow Mrs. Nancy Johnson who is enumerated in Jackson County, Arkansas, in 1840 and is age 30-40 or born 1800/1810. Nancy Johnson was a widow before June 1, 1840, as she was enumerated as the head of her household with minor children in Jackson County, Arkansas. Further evidence of her marital status is found in the records of the Circuit Court for Jackson County, Arkansas, as she obtained judgment on October 13, 1840, in a lawsuit to collect on an account stated. She had filed the claim in her on right as the sole plaintiff which clearly shows that she was a widow. Nancy Johnson married second in Jackson County, Arkansas, James Breckenridge Sr. who was born about 1787 in North Carolina. After her remarriage they continued to live in Jackson County, Arkansas. Members of this Breckenridge family previously lived in Southeast Missouri prior to settling in Jackson County, Arkansas, and a James Breckenridge was a Justice of the Peace in Wayne County in 1834 and 1838. Constant Johnson and his family resided in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, until at least 1832 as Constant appears in the estate records of his deceased brother Jonathan Johnson as a purchaser of assets in the estate. This is also true of his nephews William Baker and James Baker, the sons of his brother-in-law John Baker and his deceased sister, Willie Elmey (Johnson) Baker. Thereafter, a C. Johnson is found on the tax lists for 1836 in Jackson County, Territory of Arkansas, along with Constant Johnsons brother Ransom Johnson. There he apparently died prior to the 1840 census. Nancy Johnson is enumerated as the head of a family in 1840 which of course establishes that she is not the wife of Ransom Johnson, as Ransom was still living in 1840 and is enumerated separately with his own family, including a female of age to be his wife. In addition, from the estate records in Madison County we know that Ransom did not die until 1845. The following children are placed as the children of Constant Johnson and Nancy (unknown): Frances Johnson born about 1823 David Johnson born about 1824 Nancy Jane Johnson born about 1828 Noble Johnson born about 1830 Ransom Johnson born about 1830 Louisa Johnson born about 1834 Mary Johnson born about 1835 William Johnson born about 1836 Notes from a manuscript © 2007 All rights reserved.
