Note: H42
Note: Joseph Darlington Johnson was devoted to the Baptist movement in Southeast Missouri and served as a messenger, delegate, and moderator for Little Vine Association from its formation in 1850 until 1869. By 1856 he was ordained into the gospel ministry of the Baptist Church. In 1868 and 1869 he is listed as continuing as pastor of the Castor Baptist Church and was elected moderator of the association. In 1869 he was appointed moderator for the last time according to the Minutes of the St. Francois Baptist Association which served Madison County, Missouri, beginning in 1850. Some of the minutes and other records are not extant. In politics he was a staunch prohibitionist. He served in the Confederate Army in Company C, 2nd Regiment Missouri Cavalry, under the command of Daniel McGee, and was among the Missourians who refused to leave the state. After the death of Maria Louisa Johnson Moss Johnson, Rev. Johnson returned to Madison County, Missouri, for a visit and on December 1, 1895, he celebrated his 74th birthday by marrying his niece Mary Marzilla Johnson at the residence of Mrs. Sarah Millsap in Madison County. Before returning to California with his second wife, he solemnized the marriage of his nephew, the older brother of his new bride, James M. Johnson and Calidonia Millsap on December 3, 1895, in the Millsap home. Mary M. Johnson was born on November 29, 1853, in Madison County, Missouri, the spinster daughter of Edward Albert Johnson and Eliza Ann Pinkerton. Since the bride and groom were related by the half-blood their marriage was legal although it was voidable. After their marriage they lived in Meridian, Sutter County, California, where Joseph Johnson continued to preach the gospel until his death in 1907. Although twice married he never had children. Following his death his widow returned to Madison County, Missouri, and once again lived with her unmarried brothers, Henry Johnson, Alexander Johnson, and Robert Franklin Johnson. Mary Marzilla Johnson died on June 19, 1921, and she is interred at Little Vine Cemetery. Notes from a manuscript © 2007 All rights reserved.
