Benjamin Davis, Sr (Evan Davis Sr2, Morgan Davis1) was born July 17, 1719 in the Welsh Tract lying in Merion Township which was mostly in Montgomery County northeast of Philadelphia, and died August 27, 1797 in Family burying ground Little Pee Dee Landing, South Carolina. He married Rachel Port on February 21, 1748/49 in Prince Frederick Parish, South Carolina, daughter of Thomas Port and Frances Hinston. She was born March 1731/32, and died 1800.
The Welsh Tract in Pennsylvania was originally settled by Quakers from Wales but because many of them became Baptists the area was primarily described as the Welsh Tract rather than the Quaker Tract. William Penn was a Quaker and many of the early settlers of his Pennsylvania Colony were members of the Society of Friends.
Most of the Welsh settlers in South Carolina were Baptists or decided to become Baptists after they arrived from Pennsylvania. These Welsh Baptists kept a distinct cultural identity within their church communities for several years after they arrived in South Carolina. In 1759, a membership list of the church members taken at Welsh Neck Church included the names of sixty-five members. Of those members' surnames, only four were of non-Welsh descent, or English and Scottish origin.
Benjamin Davis was a Patriot of the Revolutionary War.
