a. Note:   ril 1847. They saile d down the Ohio to Newport Kentucky where they received a very short training. Then they sai led down the mississippi river to New Orleans and borded Navy transports to Vera Cruz. The y were in many battles, they stormed the Great Stone Fortress of Chapultepec, and successful ly storned the Belen Garita and Cosme Garita-twin gates to the capital city of Mexico on 13 S eptember 1847. After the war they sailed from Vera Cruz to Fort Hamilton New York where Gilbe rt was discharged on 15 August 1848. They took the B&O railway to Cumberland Maryland wher e it terminated and then took a Stage on the National Toad to Wheeling. There they took pas sage on the #2 Steamer to Ravenswood and walked the rest of the way to Ripley. It should be n oted that he fought under General Worth sho lost and arm. Fort Worth Texas is named after hi m. Gilbert also said that he fought battles in Belangrade, Comigrade and Santiana.
 The first time that Gilbert can be found on Personal Tax toll was 1846. Men were required b y law to be registered by the age of 21.
 Mary and Gilbert bought 200 acres of land in Jackson Co., from Zebulon Harrison.
 Gilbert was also a school teacher for Mr. Ruffner in 1841.
 Gilbert stated that he grew up near Turkey Creek, he also spole of Hurrican and Trace Fork . Sharon said she was raised by Hugh Kizer. There was a Hannah Kizer in Harrison Co. Virgini a in 1818.
 Gilbert mined for Silver in Gothic, Gunnison and Crested Butte. The Virginia Darre was wher e he found all the silver.
