Note: William Bailey Smith, Jr., locally known as "Bill" was born 1912 on his parent's farm three miles west of Hale Center, TX. He grew up there, graduated from Hale Center High School and began farming operations before he met Mary Kyle. The newly arrived little blonde was a teacher in nearby Iowa Avenue School. A brief courtship resulted in a Dallas wedding on July 23, 1936, at the home of her brother, Roy Kyle. Mary's father, L. L. Kyle, established The Olton Enterprise, Olton, TX, newspaper in 1926, and in 1937 Bill and Mary took over the publication, doing everything from selling ads, writing news, setting type, operation the old linotype machine and printing the newspaper. Bill served his country in World War II assigned to the Coast Guard Beach Patrol in Florida. He was medically discharged in 1943, and they returned to Olton and The Enterprise. He sold the newspaper in 1950, and bought the Olton Hardware, operating it for six years. He operated his own repair business for several years. He was the City Judge of Olton for numerous years. He served as manager of the ORC swimming pool ten years before retiring. Retiring in 1975, Bill and Mary bought a motor home so that he could enjoy more of his chief recreation--fishing. But failing health has now limited this activity greatly. Both of them moved into the Runningwater Draw Care Center in Olton, TX in 1994.
