George Edward (Ned) Smith b. 1842 d. 1900, Son of William B. Smith and Sarah Emily Ralls
George Edward (Ned) Smith served in the Civil War and fought for the Confederacy. He was a Corporal at the end of the Civil War. He was in Company F, 10th Regiment, Virginia Calvary, Beale's Calvary Brigade, W.H.F. Lee's Calvary Division. W.H.F. Lee was Robert E. Lee's oldest son. (Source and letter from James L. Forsythe to Ella Smith dated February 21, 1969.)
Folklore has it that in about 1866, he went down the James River in Virginia on a small boat to the Portsmouth area. There he sailed on a larger ship to Texas. He probably landed in the Galveston area, then went up the Brazos River to Washington on the Brazos, Washington County, Texas.
Prior to going to Texas he lived in the Greenwood area at Rose Cottage Plantation, Albemarle County, VA, which was owned by his father, William B. Smith. Rose Hill listed in Virginia House Tour was later built on this land. Mrs. William R. Massie had Rose Hill built.
George married Nancy Lipscomb in Washington County, TX in 1869. He is listed in the Washington County 1870 census. His half brother, William Alfred Smith, is also listed as living with them in 1870, along with Henry A. McArdle, his brother-in-law. He is listed in the 1880 Collin County, TX census, and living in Lebanon in 1882. He died in 1900. He is buried beside his wife, Nancy, in the Rowlett Cemetery in Collin County, Texas.
