Note: per Alan Greenhalgh's research and family lore, her son Charles was only 15 when she died. (Note: If this is true, her year of death was 1883 but the 1881 census shows that she was 54 in 1881 and Charles was 23, so he really was 25 when she died.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------- I had been unable to identify any locale called Hetton Brick Garth in County Durham. There is a place called Hetton-Le-Hole halfway between Durham and Sunderland. It may have been the name of an area near there... the full name comes from family genealogical data. The 1881 census lists the place simply as Hetton, Durham. but Richard Bulmer has clarified this from his researches for us in 2007 as follows : ========== Just so happens that I found my great grandfather, William Bulmer born 1841 at Monkwearmouth Shore. He became a Coal Miner, so moved around County Durham mining villages. In the Hettons, Easington and Haswell area the villages virtually run into one another. My grandfather, Richard Bulmer was born at South Hetton in 1873. However, in the 1871 father William lived at 62 Brick Garth, Easington Lane - near Primitive Methodist Church. Easington Lane is literally a few hundred yards up the road from Hetton-le-Hole, whilst South Hetton is on the opposite side of Easington Lane. Ellemore coal mine, where William worked stoking the boilers for the Pit Head steam engine, is just at the end of Brick Garth. I have a map of the area. Also found a copy of a Sunderland Echo article at Easington Lane Public Library. ================ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The only death index entry I could find for an Eliza Hammond in Sunderland was as follows : England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1900 Hammond, Eliza Year: 1883 Quarter: September Record Type: Deaths Volume: 10a District: Sunderland Page: 363 This would seem to correspond to the full date of death that we had. We would need to consult the full GRO record to determine if this was the correct date and person for certain. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ 1881 English Census, Monkwearmouth Shore,Sunderland, Durham, England Ecclesiatical Paris of St Cuthbert address: Howick Street Eliza Hammond, head, mother, age 54, widow, born in Hetton, Durham, England, occ: confectioner, Charles E.P. Hammond, son, unmarried, age 23, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham, England, occ: telegraph clerk (serv) Jane P. Hammond, daughter, unmarried, age 14, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham, England, occ: teacher board school Source Information: Dwelling Howick St (Note: The LDS transription gives house # 40 but there is no such indication on the original sheet) Census Place Monkwearmouth Shore, Durham, England Family History Library Film 1342205 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 5006 / 115 Page Number 3 (ancestry.com image #3 of 105) this census was our first clue about Jane P. Hammond. Elizabeth's age corresponds to the date of birth we had, and the son's name, Charles E. P., and his occupation assures us that this was the correct family. I am guessing that the initial letter "P" in their names stood for Pearson the mother's maiden name -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------
