Note: Mike Cady had marriage date as Nov 28, 1882, we had Nov 22, 1882 ? He is buried in Coudersport, PA in Eulalia Cemetery His birth date is also given variously as May 5, 1854 or May 15, 1854 in family records. The Eulalia Cemetery Company records in Coudersport show it as May 15, 1854, and death as January 4, 1950. Mike Cady also shows his date of death as Jan 4, 1950. After his parents were married and had their first child, John, in Smyrna, Delaware, Matilda and possibly baby John went back to Ireland where Matilda took care of some business arrangements and cared for her husband's father John. While there, son Daniel was born and Matilda and Daniel (age 5) (and young John ?) returned to the USA in 1857. That's why Daniel was born in Ireland while the rest of the children were born in Delaware and Pennsylvania and NY. (The 1920 census shows Daniel's immigration as 1860 and naturalization in 1865. He would have been only 11 when he was naturalized, I'm not sure that was possible. His father was naturalized in 1858 (we have a copy of the certificate), so perhaps Matilda was naturalized in 1865 and thus her child would have automatically become a citizen too ?? but would they not all have automatically become citizens in 1858 with the naturalization of the father ??) Matilda's date of immigration in the 1900 census is shown as 1857. That would have been the second time Matilda came to the USA, --------------------------------------------------------------- (The following info is from a newspaper article that appeared following his death - probably from the Coudersport local paper - [is that the Potter County Journal ??] - note that there are several misspellings and inaccuracies as is usual with such articles.)-rkm =============== Dan McConeghy Dies At Advanced Age of 95 Years Aged Man was C.&P.A. Conductor For More Than Forty Years -- Known to Large Number of People Over Potter County One of the oldest residents of Potter County, Daniel McConeghy of Coudersport, passed away early yesterday morning (Jan. 4, 1950) The aged man had been remarkably active until about three years ago. During that period he had failed slowly until the end of his long life. Mr. McConeghy was born in Ballymacfin Parish, Derrykeighan, [note: this is wrong, Ballymacfin is a townland name and was in Billy parish, but possibly attached to Derrykeighan in some way as well, there were several sorts of subdivisions both civil and religious - rkm] County Antrim, Ireland, May 15, 1854. He was a son of Daniel and Mathilda Morrow McConeghy. He came to this country while young and lived at Larrabee before coming to Coudersport as an employee of the C.&P.A. Railroad. He was a passenger conductor on that road for 43 years. He married Ellen Keating, Nov. 28, 1882 at Clermont. She died years ago. Surviving are six children: Mrs. Mathilda Bray, Seattle, Wash.; Daniel McConeghy, Norwalk, Ohio, Dr. John K. McConeghy, California, Miss Mary McConeghy, Mrs. Frances Philo and Miss Eleanor McConeghy, Coudersport. One sister, Mrs. Mathilda Reedy [Reidy - rkm], Coudersport, also survives. He married Mrs. Laura [Larrabee] Marsh as his second wife, who preceded him in death several years ago. Mr. McConeghy was a member of the Presbyterian Church, of Eulalia Lodge, F. & A.M. and Coudersport Consistory. Funeral service will be held from the Schutt Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock, Friday afternoon, with Dr. Chester Todd officiating. Interment will be in Eulalia Cemetery. ========= Note: Our first real evidence that this Daniel was named Daniel Cushing McConeghy is the draft registration document of his son (b. 1888) who was registered and who signed his name as Daniel C. McConeghy, Jr. We do not have any evidence that this Daniel (b1854) ever went by the name Daniel Jr. or Daniel, II and both the naturaliztion document and the real-estate house sale document we have for his father refer to him simply as Daniel McConeghy (or McConaghy). However nomenclature such as "Jr. or "II" or "III" was not commonly used in the 19th century and earlier to differentiate members of different generations. Probably because it was so common for the same names to be used over and over in each generation, and also because people did not usually need to use such extra identification details since what sparse records that were kept were merely local. ------------------------------------------------------- 1860 US Census - Delaware, Kent County, Smyrna Landing - Duck Creek Hundred (Post Office : Smyrna) enumerated July 9 1860. On the first page the McConeghy surname is difficult to read, it looks like McConagr/v or McConager or McConafer, on the second page it is looks more like McConethy. It is misindexed as Mc conager(Unknown) or Mc conaghr (Unknown) in ancestry.com's index on genealogy.com it is indexed as McConafer. wife Matilda's age appears to be listed as 49 but she should have been 47 so it is possibly just sloppy writing. ----------------------------------------------------- 1880 US Census Larrabee Village, Eldred Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania, ED #87, Dwelling #558, family # 580, page #58, sheet 274-B, enumerated July 16, 1880, ancestry.com image # 58 of 67. If she had been 36 in July 1860 (census) she should have been 56 in July 1880 (census) the birthdate we have for her would have made her 37 in 1860 and 57 in 1880 not 58.) Census ages are sometimes confusing - the 1880 census instructions say to enter the age at last birthday prior to June 1 1880. The census year officially ended May 31, so they wanted the age of people within the census year, but in this case they were enumerating 90 days later than that so who knows what they were actually recording) Other than the mother, the ages are all about as expected plus or minus one year. ------------------------------------------------ 1890 Census lost - Daniel and Ellen were living in Coudersport PA then, Daniel would have been about 36 ----------------------------------------------- 1900 Census, Coudersport Borough, Second Ward, Eulalia Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania, ED #105, page #9, dwelling #182, family #187, genealogy.com image #50 of 91, enumerated June 6, 1900. Dan Jr was listed out of order he should have come before Fannie. *Dan's birthyear is shown as 1889 and his age as 11, but he was born in July so he wouln't have been 11 for another month, but we have his birthyear from other sources as 1888 so 11 would have been correct. Matilde was called Tillie for short just as Frances was called Fannie, and both Daniels are recorded as Dan. This enumerator obviously did not insist on formality when it came to names :-) The child who was not living was Eleanor's twin, James who had died at 5 months ---------------------------------------------------- 1910 US Census, ED #111, Ward 2, Coudersport, Eulalia Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania, dwelling #, family # , sheet 10-A, image 19 of 34, enumerated April 25, 1910. address : 107 Erie (?) [Note: as far as we know both Daniel's parents were born in Northern Ireland as well. It is possible that the enumerator was told they were Scots-Irish.] ------------------------------------------------------------- According to an article in the Coudersport Enterprise that was printed sometime in 1925 or 1926, Daniel McConeghy (there named Daniel E. McConeghy) resigned his position as RR conductor and sold the family home to the Presbyterian Church to be used as the Presbyterian Manse (rectory ?) and moved to Jacksonville Florida where he had other employment. His wife accompanied him as far as Washington (this was probably Washington NJ not DC the article did not specify) where she was visiting and that she planned to return for the summer to Coudersport before going to Florida. They apparently did not remain in Florida, but apparently moved to New Jersey where we find them apparently poultry farming in 1930. (daughter Frances' husband Mr Philo was an expert in poultry farming) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1920 US Census, Washington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, ED #74, enumerated May 23 1930, dwelling # 68, family # 68, page # 3-A, sheet stamped #230, image #5 of 10. (no addresses given) Daniel McConeghy, head, age 75, born in Ireland (North), parents born in Ireland (North), occ: farmer - Poutery(sic) [i.e.Poultry], owned his home, value $2000, first married at age 27 [note: that was to his first wife] They owned a radio set and lived on a farm. Immigrated in 1860 Laura R. McConeghy, wife, age 68, born in PA, parents born in NY, occ: none, first married at age 23 [note: to her first husband] [Note: the occupation of the next listed head of family (mail carrier) was erroneously written next to her name by the enumerator but arrows were inserted to indicate the correct placement] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Letters from Elsie Mae Walker McConeghy, wife of Daniel's son Robert K. McConeghy, written to her youngest son Robert K. Jr while he was attending The Peddie School about 1933 indicate that due to Daniel's declining health, Daniel and Laura moved back to Coudersport to live with Robert K. and Elsie (in the bedroom that had previously belonged to Robert K. Jr's older brother Jim (Daniel James) . Elsie died 3 years later in 1936 while her son was attending Dartmouth College. Laura died in 1942 in New Jersey about 9 years later so it is possible that Daniel and Laura had returned to live in NJ at some point. Daniel's son, Robert K. Sr. ,died in 1944 but Daniel lived on until 1950 when he died in Coudersport. I do not know who he was living with at that time. Possibly with his daughter Frances (Philo) whose husband had died in 1937, (I believe that prior to that the Philos had lived in Florida.), or with daughter Eleanor.
