Note: Margaret died in 1896 according to our family lore. This corresponds to the cemetery marker in the Orbisonia cemetery, which states that she died on March 16, 1896 aged 32. That would mean she had been born in 1864. But according to Dave Lepitre at the Stanstead Journal in Canada, the parish records for St Patrick's Church in Magog, Quebec say that Marguerite Eliza Cassady was born Sept 7, 1862 and baptized on Sept 9th, 1862. But that was only 6 months after Thomas and Mary were married according to the same source ?? We are assuming that this was Margaret and that the age on the cemetery monument is incorrect and she would really have been 33-1/2 when she died. Margarite Flaharty (her grandmother) and Thomas Smith were the God-parents of Marguerite Eliza Cassady (= ? Margaret Cassady) according to the St Patrick's parish records in Magog, Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada or notices in the the Stanstead Journal. We are not sure who Thomas Smith was, but surmise that he was the second husband of Margarite Flaharty and thus would have been Mary Mulray/Murphy/Murvy's step-father. We assume Margaret and Henry married after June 1880 because Henry was still listed with his mother in June 22 1880, but Margaret was not listed with her parents in the 1880 census when she would have been about 18 so it is unclear where she was - perhaps living with another Cassady relation or perhaps working and living with another family as a servant ? Possibly she could have been away on a visit - it is unclear how such cases were handled. Margaret is not shown in the 1900 census, her husband Henry is shown as a widower. The 1900 census shows the birthplace of the children's mother as Pennsylvania but as she moved to Pennsylvania as an infant this would have been a natural assumption. The 1930 census did show that Elsie's mother was born in "Canada-French" (i.e. Quebec) Margaret's youngest child was born in Aug 1895 and died in May 1896 and Margaret died in March 1896. Perhaps neither Margaret nor the child ever recovered from the birth, or they may have both died of some epidemic illness (just supposition). Unfortunately the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire so we do not know if the family was living in Rockhill in 1896 or 1890. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------- 1870 US Census, Philipstown,(post office: Mahopac Falls),Putnam County, New York, ED #, page #54 (stamped #101-B), dwelling #337, family #427, genealogy.com image #, enumerated June 30, 1870. the dwelling apparently was some sort of appartment house, there were 6 different families living in it Thomas Casity(sic), head, age 49, born in Ireland, parents foregn born, occ: foundryman, was not a citizen Mary, wife, age 42, born in Ireland, parents foreign born, occ: keeps house, could not read or write Margarite(sic), daughter, age 7, born in NY, attended school Kate, daughter, age 5, born in NY, sttended school Bridgitt(sic), daughter, age 3, born in NY -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1880 Census - not located ------------------------------------------- We have a photo of Margaret's grave in the Orbisonia Cemetery thanks to Sue Smith!
