Fred attended Fordham University and then was in the Army in World War Two. By chance he became the manager of an Army basketball team and spent a substantial part of the war travelling around the USA caring for the team while they played various other Army teams! After the war he went to Harvard where he got an MBA from the School of Business and then decided that there would be good opportunities in the South. To investigate, he took a position at Duke University for a year or two, but instead wound up staying 30 years, retiring as Professor and having served as Assistant Provost. During his time at Duke he was instrumental in several very important areas: he was one of the earliest and strongest promoters of what was to become Research Triangle Park, the now famous international research area. Also, he was a strong promoter of the School of Forestry, developed some classes in Forestry Business practices, and encouraged development and support for what was later to become the School of the Environment. He also was a very strong supporter of the Marine Lab at Beaufort and the series of oceanographic vessels from the RV Eastward on. He was highly respected and liked by his students as a good teacher and a master raconteur. After his retirement he moved back to New Hampshire to the area near Winnisquam where he and his wife had courted. Sadly, they lived there only a short time before he died suddenly of a heart attack.
