[thanks go to Richard Bulmer for finding this record !] ----------------------------- SS# 011-07-9834 emigrated to USA in 1920 --------------------------------------- was interviewed Jan 20 1989 by Matthew Hammond McConeghy and his parents in Hudson MA. He was then 92 years old. Main topic was Hammond family history. He served in the British Army in WW-I. He was in the 4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, the 149th Brigade, the 50th Division, V Corps, Second Army. (Infantry).He was 17 at the time. He had been in the Territorial Army and was mobilized when the war broke out Aug 4th 1914 at 6PM, they shipped out at 5AM next day. He was first stationed at a Submarine base in Blyth about 50 miles north of Newcastle on the British coast on guard duty. The subs used to go off to Dogger Bank. He went to France in April 1915, the 2nd battle of Ypres, when the Germans used gas, the first gas attack, about the 19th of April His brother, Matthew Hammond, who was serving as a Signal Corps Cavalry Officer in the US Army, visited him on the lines at least twice in WW-I, once he arrived on horseback, once on a motorcycle.
