Note: according to Charley Hammond, Matthew Potts and wife also had a son who died of Rheumatic fever at age 21, but he may have been thinking of a cousin instead. Not sure if that could have been Matthew M. (17 in the 1881 census) or another son who had already died by 1881. Son Matthew did die in 1900 at age 37 apparently if the GRO reference I found is the correct person. And apparently son William A[rmstrong] Potts died before age 11 so he is the more likely candidate for the rheumatic fever victim. The Potts family lived in Sunderland, County Durham. Matthew Potts had a boat building business in Sunderland, they built lifeboats for ocean liners. We originally had a birth year for Matthew Potts of 1830 but the age of 31 in the online UK 1881 Census seems to indicate that he was born about 1849. But since he had a daughter who was 19, I believe that the age of 31 was incorrect, and that the age really was supposed to be 51, which would place his birth year at about 1830 as we originally had from family sources. this is supported by the agesgiven in other census years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1851 English Census Monkwearmouth Shore, Sunderland, Durham County, England, District 2f, page 59 of 72 address: Dock Street schedule 283 William Kirkbride, head, age 69, occ: tailor [Ship & S'men]??, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham Margaret Kirkbride, wife, age 65, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham Ann Potts, daughter, age 44, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham Matthew Potts, grandson, age 21, occ: Boat Builder, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham Margaret O. William Mewburn is given as "brother" but he would have been Margaret's brother, so he would have been "brother-in-law" Grace Mewburn, is given as "sister-in-law". They were Margaret's older brother and sister "U" stands for "unmarried". Margaret's age is apparently correct here although she is definitely listed as age 49 in the 1891 census image, She is definitely shown as 69 in the 1901 census, so she must have been 49 here. (The ages of adults seem to vary wildly from census to census - either the information was being supplied by children or others who had no idea, or maybe the enumerators were just guessing or were very disorganized - for example William Newburn only appear to have aged 6 years in the 10 years between 1871 and 1881, but his sister Grace aged 22 years in the same period, but the ages of the children seem very consistent) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There also was a different Matthew Potts in Monkwearmouth in the 1881 census, he was younger, only 37, and his wife was named Elizabeth, but he also was a boat builder, his children were named Mabel, Jno. William, and Elizabeth Ann. They lived in Monkwearmouth Shore. It seems likely they were also related in some way. There were tons of other Matthew Potts all over the place as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- 1891 English Census, Monkwearmouth Shore, Durham County, England, district #15, page 28, schedule # 187 administrative County of Sunderland, Civil Paris of Monkearmouth Shore, municipal borough : Sunderland, municipal ward : Monkwearmouth, Eccles. parish : Venerable Bede, ancestry.com image #28 of 74 (verified by examination of the actual census image) address : 77 Dock Street East Matthew Potts, age 61, married, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Margaret, wife, age 49(sic) [59 is the correct age], married, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Matthew, son, age 27,single, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Ann, daughter, age 22, single, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Rosmond, daughter, single, age 14, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland No profession or employment status was recorded for any of them, so perhaps they were not at home, which may make their places of birth in question as that information may have been supplied by a neighbor or have simply been assumed by the enumerator. Note: Rosamund, age 14, is shown both here and also living with her married sister Elizabeth G Hammond The English census supposedly enumerated people at the place they had spent the night the day of the census, so if people were travelling or visiting they were counted where they were. Somehow Rose appears to have been counted twice ! Margaret's age is incorrect here. The image definitely records her age as 49 here, but the transcription of the 1881 census showed her as 49 then and the 1901 census clearly shows her as 69 then so she must have been 59 in 1891. Son Matthew was actually listed as a daughter, but his age was recorded in the male column. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1901 English Census, Monkwearmouth, District 10,Sunderland Borough, Durham County, England, GRO ref 13/4722, page 25, stamped 126, ancestry.com images # 25 of 54, schedule entry #162 Civil Parish: Sunderland, eccles parish: Monkwearmouth - All Saints, County Borough: Sunderland, Ward of Municipal Borough: Roker address: 7 Beatrice (4 rooms) Potts, Matthew, head, age 71, occ: Boat Builder (Shipw.), employer, born in Durham Co, Sunderland Margaret M., wife, age 69, born in Durham Co, Sunderland Rosemund, daughter, age 24, single, born in Durham Co, Sunderland the occupation is actually written next to the wife, but that is obviously an error. no occ is given for Rosemund. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is likely to be the reference to his death record England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1983 Record Name: Matthew Potts Birth Date: abt 1830 Year of Registration: 1909 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar Age at death: 79 District: Sunderland County: Co.
