Note: according to Charley Hammond's family bible, Matthew's wife's name was Margaret Newburn Potts according to Matthew H. McConeghy who saw the bible when he visited Charley. But he could have misread it. I have not seen that bible. We also had her name as Elizabeth Grace Newburn but don't know the source of that name, it may have just been a confusion with her daughter's name. However, apparently the name wasn't Newburn but was Mewburn. At first I thought that was just a typo or misreading of the census handwriting by whoever transcribed it, but all the other on-line parish records, etc. show the name as Mewburn rather than Newburn so it doesn't seem likely that all the transcriptions were incorrect. Also there are many Mewburns in the area and the 1891 census images clearly show those names as Mewburn not Newburn. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is an official christening record (film batch # C017609 according to Familysearch.com) for a Margaret Mewburn in Monkwearmouth, County Durham, at St Peter's July 31, 1831, she was born July 8, 1831. Father : Armstrong Mewburn, mother: Grace. This data supports the 1881 age of 49, and would mean that the 1891 age should have been 59. The christening record appears to apply to the correct person, because the mother's name of Grace is supportive as well, since Margaret's first daughter was named Elizabeth Grace and Margaret also had an older sister named Grace (see 1881 census above). There is also a submitted Christening record for a Grace Mewburn on July 13, 1828 with the same parents names. And that record might indicate that the age given for Grace Mewburn in the 1881 census was incorrect as well. Instead of 62 she would have been 52. That record was submitted by a member of the LDS church (Batch 8501630 sheet #31 source call # 1391531) and does not have the authority of an actual official church record. It does not state a church name but does give location as Monkwearmouth, Durham. ------------------------------------------------------- 1841 English Census, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham County, England, District #6, page 33, image 33 of 35 address: Thomas Street Armstrong Mewburn, age 50, occ: Boat Builder, born in Durham County William Mewburn, age 23, occ: Shoe Maker, born in Durham County Anthony Mewburn, age 20, occ: Tailor, born in Durham County Armstrong Mewburn, age 18, apprentice Joiner, born in Durham County Grace Mewburn, age 50, born in Durham County Elizabeth Mewburn, age 15, School, born in Durham County Grace Mewburn, age 13, School (crossed out), born in Durham County Margaret Mewburn, age 10, School (crossed out), born in Durham County ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1851 English Census, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham County, England, District 1b, page 4 (also stamped 41), image #4 of 48 address: Thomas Street schedule # 19 Armstrong Mewburn, head, age 62, married, occ: Jouneyman Boat Builder, born in Ryhope, Durham Grace Mewburn, wife, age 62, married, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham William Mewburn, son, age 33, unmarried, occ: Shoe Maker, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham Grace Mewburn, daughter, age 22, occ: Dress Maker, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham Margaret Mewburn, daughter, age 19, unmarried, occ: Bonnet Maker, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham -------------------------------------------------------- 1861 English Census, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham County, England, page 79 of 83 (stamped 43) address: Thomas Street schedule #440 Armstrong Mewburn, head, age 72, Married, occ: Boat Builder, born in Bishops wearmouth (?) William Mewburn is given as "brother" but he would have been Margaret's brother, so he would have been "brother-in-law" Grace Mewburn, is given as "sister-in-law". They were Margaret's older brother and sister "U" stands for "unmarried". Margaret's age is apparently correct here although she is definitely listed as age 49 in the 1891 census image, She is definitely shown as 69 in the 1901 census, so she must have been 49 here. (The ages of adults seem to vary wildly from census to census - either the information was being supplied by children or others who had no idea, or maybe the enumerators were just guessing or were very disorganized - for example William Newburn only appear to have aged 6 years in the 10 years between 1871 and 1881, but his sister Grace aged 22 years in the same period, but the ages of the children seem very consistent) A possible submitted christening record for Grace Mewburn (see below) would indicate that her age of 62 here is incorrect and that it should really be 52 which would be much more in line with the age given in 1871. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1891 English Census, Monkwearmouth Shore, Durham County, England, district #15, page 28, schedule # 187 administrative County of Sunderland, Civil Paris of Monkearmouth Shore, municipal borough : Sunderland, municipal ward : Monkwearmouth, Eccles. parish : Venerable Bede, ancestry.com image #28 of 74 (verified by examination of the actual census image) address : 77 Dock Street East Matthew Potts, age 61, married, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Margaret, wife, age 49(sic) [59 is the correct age], married, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Matthew, son, age 27,single, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Ann, daughter, age 22, single, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland Rosmond, daughter, single, age 14, born in Durham Co., - Sunderland No profession or employment status was recorded for any of them, so perhaps they were not at home, which may make their places of birth in question as that information may have been supplied by a neighbor or have simply been assumed by the enumerator. Note: Rosamund, age 14, is shown both here and also living with her married sister Elizabeth G Hammond The English census supposedly enumerated people at the place they had spent the night the day of the census, so if people were travelling or visiting they were counted where they were. Somehow Rose appears to have been counted twice ! Margaret's age is incorrect here. The image definitely records her age as 49 here, but the transcription of the 1881 census showed her as 49 then and the 1901 census clearly shows her as 69 then so she must have been 59 in 1891. Son Matthew was actually listed as a daughter, but his age was recorded in the male column. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1901 English Census, Monkwearmouth, District 10,Sunderland Borough, Durham County, England, GRO ref 13/4722, page 25, stamped 126, ancestry.com images # 25 of 54, schedule entry #162 Civil Parish: Sunderland, eccles parish: Monkwearmouth - All Saints, County Borough: Sunderland, Ward of Municipal Borough: Roker address: 7 Beatrice (4 rooms) Potts, Matthew, head, age 71, occ: Boat Builder (Shipw.), employer, born in Durham Co, Sunderland Margaret M., wife, age 69, born in Durham Co, Sunderland Rosemund, daughter, age 24, single, born in Durham Co, Sunderland -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
