Notes
a. Note:   Old Parish registers - Marriages 265/ 0030 0238
 Marykirk, Kincardineshire, Scotland
"Oct 21sr 1841 - Alexander Taylor and Ann Low both of this parish were contracted in order to marriage(sic)"
[this may have been the date of the posting of the Banns - the birth registration of son David Paton Taylor in 1866
gives a marriage date of what appears to be November 26, 1841
He was supposedly nicknamed "Black Sandy" because of his dark complexion.
The birth record of his son Andrew, states that Alexander was a "power loom weaver"
According to his grandson, D. Norman Taylor, Alexander had employment in one of the major mills as the sole representative of the ancient skill of hand loom setup and weaving, it being his job, when anything went wrong with the power looms, to correct the error by hand and so set the mill going again.
According to Norman Taylor, Alexander was described by his son, David Paton Taylor, as having a strong and independant character. Nothing was permitted to be bought on "tick" and everything must be the best of its kind, not the most expensive, but the best wearing, thus if say boots, they had to be of solid contruction and stout leather.
We now have his death registration thanks to Leslie Chapman. It supplies his parent's names (we previously had his father's name as William in error and did not have his mother's name. It verifies his deceased wife's name as Anne Low. I cannot decipher his occupation it has 3 words the first two are "Warper, Canvas" and then a word that look like "Sretny". The death was reported by his son Andrew Taylor.
His occupation in the 1861 census was listed as Canvas Warper (flax).
(In the power loom mills a warper was the person who set up and maintained the warp threads for the cloth on the looms.)
The birth record for son David Paton Taylor in 1866 lists the marriage date for Alexander and Ann as what looks like November 26 1841 but it is hard to read, the 26 is clear anyway :-) The Marykirk Old parish register gives a date of October 21 1841 for the date of the contract in order to marry.
