Note: He was a County farm extension agent in New Hampshire. They lived in Exeter, NH. They had a summer house on Lake Winnesquam NH next to the home of Matthew Hammond and Jessie Taylor. The house was still owned by their family (in 2002). (The Chapman family now). His middle name was Alson according to family sources and his father's middle name was Almerion, despite this he was named James A. Purington IV, one would normally only carry the numeral if the entire name was identical to the father's, so it is not certain what James A. Jr, and James Sr.'s middle names might have been. One would assumer they were all Almerion, but possibly only the first names were identical. James (Jimmy) had an (older) brother George Purington married to Ella, they had a son Ward Purington, who had a son Ward Jr and a daughter Noreen. I have no actual data on them as yet, this is from personal recollection and calculation. According to Soc Sec Death Index, a Ward Purington was born 4/29/1911 and died May 1973 in Hoocksett, NH. This is probably the right person, but have no verification of that. Soc Sec also lists a James Purington born 9/12/1955 who died in Aug 1974 not sure who that could be. Too early to have been Ward's grandson and too late to have been his son, maybe he was from a different branch. James and George had other siblings but I have no recollection of haveing ever met any of them, and there are various other Purington families in NH and Maine. --------------------------------------------------- 1900 US Census, Weare, Hillsoborough County, New Hampshire, ED 137, pg 5-A, dwelling #101, family #104, enumerated June 6 1900, ancestry.com image # 9 of 32 Elmeron(sic) Purington, head, age 42, born May 1858 in Canada, parents born in NH, occ: teamster, immig 1863, naturalized, owned his farm Sarah L., wife, age 38, born March 1862 in NH, parents born in NH Fred E., son, age 21, born in NH, parents born in NH, occ: day laborer Goldie M.. daughter, age 14, born Decemeber 1885 in NH, parents born in NH, at school George A., son, age 19, born December 1880 in NH, parents born in NH, occ: day laborer Angie G., daughter, age 7, born May 1893 in NH, parents born in NH, at school James E.(sic), son, age 5, born Oct 1894 in NH, parents born in NH, at school (note that all the children are incorrectly recorded with father born in NH but he was really born in Canada) James' middle initial was actually A. and his father's name was Almerion (or Almeron ?) apparently with the New England accent it sounded like Elmerion to the enumerator which is probably why he recorded James's middle initial as E. ------------------------------------------------------------- World War I Draft Registration card - June 4, 1917 James Alson Purington age 22 place : Amherst, Massarchusetts born October 24 1894 in Weare, New Hampshire 5ft 4" tall, weight 135 pounds blue eyes, brown hair employed as Instructor at Massachusetts Agricultural College Amherst Mass. ------------------------------------------------------- World War II Draft Registration Card James Alson Purington 86 High Street, Exeter, Rockingham County, NH born Oct 24 1894 in Weare, NH age 47 wife Mrs Winifred M.
