Notes
a. Note:   Marriage Information in Smyrna, Delaware verified in Kent County, Delaware Records by Robert K. McConeghy, Jr.
After they were married and had their first child, John, either the three of them or just Matilda and John went back to Ireland. While there, Matilda apparently discovered that she was pregnant with her second child, Daniel, and stayed in Ireland for some time, maybe several years. That’s why he was born in Ireland while the rest of the childen were born in Delaware or Pennsylvania.
Daniel immigrated to USA in about between 1848 and1850 and settled first in Smyrna, Delaware. He married Matilda Morrow in the USA in 1852. He and his wife owned a house in Smyrna, Delaware, which they sold in 1852(?). We believe that after Daniel and Matilda were married and had their first child, John, in Smyrna, Delaware Matilda and John went back to Ireland supposedly to care for her aged father-in-law John McConeghy. While there, Matilda apparently discovered that she was pregnant with Daniel, and stayed for some time, returning to the US sometime before 1860 when we find them in the census in Delaware. That’s why Daniel II was born in Ireland while the rest of the children were born in Delaware or Pennsylvania. Apparently they returned to Smyrna at that time since their third and 4th children were reportedly born in Smyrna in 1861 and 1862, but the 5th child, Frances (Fannie), was born in Philadelphia in 1865, the next, Matilda, in Franklin, PA, and the last, Robert, in Oxford, Chenango Co., NY.
Daniel worked for the railroad, which accounts for their frequent relocations but the 1860 Delaware census (see below) shows his occupation as "trader" .
He became a US citizen in 1858 - naturalization declaration of intent filed in Philadelphia.
[Note: Laura Larrabee McConeghy's family history report says the naturalization papers are dated 1860.]
(The 1870 census does not mark him as a citizen however.
That could simply have been an enumerator's error based on the fact that he had been born in Ireland)
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
(there is no way to be certain this is the correct Daniel McConaghy but I have not found any other men of this name in
any other US records of this era. I am not sure how long after one had immigrated one would have filed a record of intent
with the court at that time).

Daniel died in 1878 at age 66 and is buried in Clermont, McKean Co, PA.
According to Laura Larrabee McConeghy's McConeghy Family Lineage report, Daniel had 2 sisters, Polly [possibly Mary?] and Sally and a brother John residing in Philadelphia, PA [it is unclear if she meant that all three lived in Philadelphia or just John]
I have been unable to locate any data on them.
The family is listed in the 1860 census in Smyrna Landing, Duck Creek Hundred, Kent, Delaware. (see below)
In the 1870 census they were in Franklin, Delaware Co, NY. In the 1880 census widow Matilda and children were in Larrabee, Eldred Township, McKean County, PA. By 1900 they were in Coudersport, Potter Co, PA, and Matilda was living with son Daniel in Coudersport in 1910.
The family apparently had moved to Coudersport, Potter Co., PA by 1883 when the first grandchild was born.
Daniel's tombstone (which is now broken in two) is marked "D. McConnaghey" but that is no guarantee that he spelled it that way himself.
His US citizenship naturalization certificate spells it "McConaghy", and the registered copy of the deed of sale of his house in Smyrna Delaware also spelled it "McConaghy".
The 1860 census spelled it "McConaughy".
Note that the 1803 Antrim Agricultural census appears to spell all names in Billy parish as "McConaghy" but this is probably just because that's how the enumerator thought the name should be spelled, in other parishes the name was sometimes spelled consistently in other ways but no names in any part of Antrim were spelled "McConnaghey" by any of the various enumerators.
The McConnaghey spelling appears only on his gravestone in Clermont and on the gravestone of his daughter-in-law Ellen Keating in Coudersport where she is listed as "Ellen wife of Daniel McConnaghey" (the son of this Daniel) His son's own stone, which was apparently erected many years after his death, uses the "McConeghy" spelling which also was used by Matilda Morrow in her own bible.
Note that our family records showed his birth date as Nov 1, 1812, but his gravestone shows it as Oct 31, 1812.
I don't know if there is documentary support for either of these dates (since they are adjacent days maybe he was born in the middle of the night and it was unclear what time it was :-) ?)
Also our family records showed date of death as June 12 1878, but gravestone says May 12, 1878.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------
We have no evidence that I am aware of that his full name was "Daniel Cushing McConeghy" All documents we have found and his gravestone list him only as Daniel McConeghy (various spellings), however, starting with this Daniel, the McConeghy line which moved to Ohio has continued to name a son in each generation Daniel and starting with Daniel Cushing McConeghy IV (b. 1916) has used this full name which is currently now borne by the 7th generation.
Our first documentary evidence of the middle name Cushing is the 1917 draft registration document for his grandson, who registered and signed his name "Daniel C. McConeghy, Jr." indicating that the immigrant Daniel's son was probably named Daniel Cushing McConeghy as well, but that the original Daniel possibly did not have this middle name.
This would mean that the Ohio branch is actually one number too high in its count. But there have definitely been 7 generations of consecutive Daniels.

Daniel McConaughy (sic), age 46, occupation: trader, born in Ireland, value of real estate $2000, value of personal property $100
Matilda, age 36, born in Ireland
John K., age 7, born in Delaware, attended school
Daniel, age 6, born in Delaware (sic), attended school
[Note: Daniel should have been 47 not 46 if born in Nov 1812
Matilda should have been 37 if born in June 1823
the birth in Delaware for young Daniel could simply have been an assumption by the enumerator
John's middle initial looks more like an "R" than a "K"
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------
Note: There were a few other people named McConaughy or McConaughey in the Delaware 1860 census but they are all listed as having been born in Delaware. Alexander 35 single, Ephraim, 27 (and his family)
There is no reason at this time to believe that they were related to our family.

1 RR Laborer age 60, 1 RR laborer age 45, 1 female age 31 keeping house, all were born in Ireland,
the oldest man and the woman could not read or write.)
On the first page the McConeghy surname is difficult to read, it looks like McConagr/v or McConager or McConafer, on the second page it is looks more like McConethy. It is misindexed as Mc conager(Unknown) or Mc conaghr (Unknown) in ancestry.com's index
on genealogy.com it is indexed as McConafer.
wife Matilda's age appears to be listed as 49 but she should have been 47 so it is possibly just sloppy writing.

Daniel died in 1878 at age 66 and is buried in Clermont, McKean Co, PA.
We have a photo of his gravestone, which is among the oldest group in the Clermont cemetery
immediately at the boundary at the base of a tree and it is badly deteriorated and the top has broken off
but was still barely legible.in 2003.
The stone is marked "D. McConnaghey" but that is no guarantee that he spelled it that way himself.
The naturalization letter of intent in 1858 spells it McConaghy, and so does the deed of sale for the house in Delaware in 1852.
Most surviving Irish records spell the name McConaghy for all families in most areas, but that again proves little.
