Note: date of marriage estimated from marriage ages in 1930 census -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1900 Census, Coudersport Borough, Second Ward, Eulalia Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania, ED #105, page #9, dwelling #182, family #187, genealogy.com image #50 of 91, enumerated June 6, 1900. Dan McConneghy(sic), head, age 46, born May 1854 in Ireland, parents born in Ireland, married 18 years, immigrated 1851, in US for 49 years, naturalized citizen, occ: Passenger Conductor - RR, orned his house free of mortgage Elenar(sic), wife, age 43, born Nov 1856 in Canada (Eng.), both parents born in Ireland, married 18 years, had 8 children, 7 living Robert, son, age 16, born Nov 1883 in PA, at school Mary, daughter, age 15, born Nov 1884 in PA, at school Tillie, daughter, age 14, born April 1886 in PA, at school Fannie, daughter, age 9, born June 1890 in PA, at school Dan, son, age 11, born July 1889* in PA, at school John, son, age 7, born June 1892 in PA, at school Elenar(sic), daughter, age 6, born Sept 1893 in PA, at school Note : This is a clue that Ellen Keating's name may actually have been Eleanor Keating rather than Ellen, both she and her daughter are recorded here in the misspelling "Elenar or Elenor" although she is not listed that way anywhere later that we have found. Dan Jr was listed out of order he should have come before Fannie. *Dan's birthyear is shown as 1889 and his age as 11, but he was born in July so he wouln't have been 11 for another month, but we have his birthyear from other sources as 1888 so 11 would have been correct. Matilde was called Tillie for short just as Frances was called Fannie, and both Daniels are recorded as Dan. This enumerator obviously did not insist on formality when it came to names :-) The child who was not living was Eleanor's twin, James who had died at 5 months ---------------------------------------------------------------- In his World War One Draft Registration, He is named Daniel C. McConeghy, Jr. and he signs his name as D. C. McConeghy, Jr. The 1920 census as shown below contained several suspicious data errors. The Draft registration card is much more reliable as it was actually signed by Daniel himself. Daniel's descendants consider him to have been Daniel Cushing McConeghy III, but I do not know if there is any evidence that he ever used anything other than Jr. (see additional notes on this below) He retired from the railroad. ------------------------------------------------------------------- WW I Draft Registration card - June 5th 1917 Daniel C. McConeghy Jr., age 29 205 Borie (?), Coudersport, Penna. birthdate : July 24, 1888 natural-born citizen of the USA. place of birth: Coudersport, Penna., USA employed as a laborer at the Elk Tanning Co. in Coudersport He was married and had a wife and 2 children. He had had no previous military service. He had blue eyes and brown hair and was of short height and medium build. He signed his name D. C. McConeghy, Jr., the signature is slightly backslanted to the left possibly indicating that he was left-handed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By 1920 the family had moved to Clermont from Coudersport and he had 4 children. ----------------------------------------------------- 1920 US Census Clermont, Sergeant Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania, ed 146, page #2-B, dwelling #35, family #36, enumerated Feb 24 1920, ancestry.com image 4 of 13 : Daniel J. McConeghy Jr., head, age 32, born in PA, parents born in Ireland, occ: Laborer-Tile Works, rented his home Florence, wife, age 24, born in PA, parents born in PA Ellen, daughter, age 4-8/12(?), born in PA, parents born in PA Daniel Jr.., son, age 3-4/12, born in PA, parents born in PA Gordon, son, age 1-9/12, born in PA, parents born in PA John, (erroneously listed as daughter but actually was a son), age 6/12, born in PA, parents born in PA Notes:Both Daniel's seem to be listed as "Jr". although the writing and the image is not clear. In the on-line transcriptions this is sometimes incorrectly taken to have been a middle initial "J." Both Daniel's parents native tongue is shown as Irish -This probably does not mean that they spoke Irish Gaelic however, merely that they had an Irish accent. Daniel should have still been 31 in Feb 1920 if he had been born in July 1888 as records indicate. The Tile Works were one of the main industries in Clermont at the time. Florence should have still been 23 in Feb 1920 if she was born in June 1896 as records indicate) They lived almost next door to Jacob Amend and his wife Anne (Keating) and their children. ------------------------------------- 1930 US Census, Greenwich Villiage, Greewich Township, Huron County, Ohio, ED #6, sheet 5-B, dwelling #143, family #145, enumerated April 9, 1930 address: 30 Tilton Street Daniel C. McConeghy, head, age 41, rented house - rent $15/month, did not own a radio set, age at marriage 25, born in PA, father born in Ireland, mother born in Canada, occ: Section - Railroad, had not worked on last working day, unemployemnt schedule #6 (whatever that means) Florence, wife, age 33, age at marriage 17, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: none Ellen, daughter, age 14, born in PA, attended school Daniel, son, age 13, born in PA, attended school John, son, age 10, born in PA, attended school Marjorie, daughter, age 9, born in PA, attended school Howard, son, age 8, born in PA, attended school Robert, son, age 1, born in OH (Note : it is not clear what the occupation "Section - Railroad" means - the man next door was listed as "Section foreman - Railroad" employment of these two people was coded with a different number) (Query: - where was Gordon Lloyd McConeghy who should have been about 12 in 1930 ? He didn't die until 1965. ) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Note that family data showed that John was born in Clermont, but that the older children had been born in Coudersport, so it would seem that the family had moved from Coudersport to Clermont sometime after April 1918 and before August of 1919, but it is also possible that they had moved earlier but that Florence had stayed in Coudersport with family when the children were due. The next child was born in Coudersport, then the next in Clermont and the last in Ohio. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The 1917 Draft Registration document is the first piece of real evidence I have found that indicated that his middle name was probably Cushing and that his father also had the same name. The fact that he was registered as "Jr." and signed his name that way as well, does not eliminate the possibility that his grandfather had also been named Daniel Cushing, but it would seem to make that less likely. Our previous theory that middle name "Cushing" may have first been applied to this Daniel's son in honor of the maiden name of his Aunt on his mother's side Ellen Cushing (Keating) wife of Ellen's older brother John F. Keating who also lived in Clermont at this time would now seem to be erroneous. Apparently this Daniel's father also had the middle name Cushing and it is now a mystery where that name had come from since we have not identified any previous ancestors of that name. This Daniel seems to be referred to in the Eulalia Cemetery Database notes as Daniel, Jr., but that may have merely been an interpretation of the transcriber to differentiate between this Daniel and his father in the database. (In the light of the recently discovered draft registration document, it would now seem that the Jr. was in fact used by Daniel during his lifetime and that his father therefore did have the same name) The 1920 census records had seemed to indicate that neither this Daniel, nor his son were named Daniel Cushing McConeghy, but were actually Daniel J(ames?) McConeghy , unless they may have been named Daniel James Cushing McConeghy. If the family was Roman Catholic, the James could have been a saint's name. Actual naming conventions (if there were any) at this time among Catholics in the USA are not known to me. This could simply have been an error on the part of the census enumerator however. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to family lore as transmitted by Jane Dorgeloh Muranyi and received from her mother Josephine McConeghy Dorgeloh, there was a family feud between Robert K McConeghy and Daniel Jr. resulting from the passage of a watch from Daniel Sr. to his eldest son Robert. Apparently Daniel believed the watch should have come to him since he was Daniel Jr. The disagreement supposely was the cause of Daniel Jr moving his family to Ohio. (I find it difficult to believe such a story especially since he didn't move to Ohio until some time between 1920 and 1930 when he would have been between 32 and 42 years old) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- U.S. Social Security Death Index Daniel MCCONEGHY Birth Date: 24 Jul 1888 Death Date: Jul 1973 Social Security Number: 713-07-7694 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Railroad Board Death Residence Localities ZIP Code: 44857 Localities: Bronson, Huron, Ohio Hartland, Huron, Ohio Norwalk, Huron, Ohio Olena, Huron, Ohio --------------------------------------------------------------------- Ohio Deaths, 1908-1944 and 1958-2002 Record about Daniel C McConeghy Name: Daniel C McConeghy Birth Date: Est. 1889 Gender: Male Race: White Residence County: Huron Residence State: Ohio Residence Country: United States Death Date: 2 Jul 1973 Hospital of Death: Long-Term Care Facilities City of Death: Huron County County of Death: Huron Certificate: 054360 Age at Death: 84 Certifier: Physician Autopsy: No autopsy Marital Status: Widowed ------------------------------------------------------
