Winifred Hammond McConeghy Winifred Taylor Hammond McConeghy, 87, passed away March 31, 2003 in Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert Keating McConeghy, Jr., in 1998. Winifred is survived by her sons, Robert K. McConeghy III of Tucson, Dr. Matthew H. McConeghy of Providence, Rhode Island and daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Steven Carlstedt of Mendham, New Jersey, by grandchildren Eric Carlstedt of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Britt (Carlstedt) Fucito (Mrs. Paul) of Dumfries, Virginia, Kristin Carlstedt of Mendham, New Jersey, David, Kevin and Robert McConeghy of Providence, Rhode Island, by her younger sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Alan Greenhalgh of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and many nieces and nephews. A resident of Tucson for 40 years, Win was born in Concord, Massachusetts July 13, 1915, the daughter of (Col.) Matthew Hammond originally of Newcastle, England and Jessie Taylor Hammond originally of Arbroath, Scotland. Her father was an executive of New England Telephone who served as an officer in the US Army in both the World Wars. Win grew up in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and graduated from Manchester, New Hampshire High School and Keene College, where she studied Music Education and was a violinist in the school orchestra. She received her Master of Education degree from the University of Arizona. Starting in Hanover, New Hampshire where she met her future husband, she was a classroom teacher and administrator in several school districts, coming to Tucson in 1963. In Chelmsford, Massachusetts in the 1950s she founded the Country Kindergarten, the first modern pre-school in that area. She taught in Tucson at Cavett and Bloom Elementary Schools. After teaching in Tucson nearly 20 years she enjoyed an active retirement, traveling to Europe, Africa and Asia and playing golf with her many friends at Rolling Hills. She was active with the Northminster Quilters and was a member of ADK. A memorial service will be held in Coudersport, Pennsylvania at a future date.
