Note: Her name is spelled Maude in the 1900 census, but Maud in all the later censuses and her sister Edith seems to have spelled it Maud. her middle initial is in doubt. The 1910 census seems to have "H", but the 1930 census seems to have "V" The Mt Union cemetery transcription shows her as Maude V. (Note though that we have still not proved that Maude V., wife of Elmer Stump, was definitely the same Maud who is the daughter of Henry Walker) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1900 US Census, Rockhill Borough, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, ED #103, sheet #11 (stamped 306-A), ancestry.com image #21 of 24, dwelling # 238 (originally #70), family # 240 (originally #70), enumerated June 13, 1900. address: Culvert (?) Street (no numbers were listed) Henry Walker, head, born Aug 1856, age 43, widower, occupation: RR Day Laborer, rented his house, born in PA, parents born in PA Maude, daughter, born Oct 1882, age 17, single, at school, born in PA, parents born in PA Edith, daughter, born Mar 1884, age 16, single, at school, born in PA, parents born in PA Elsie, daughter, born Sept 1889, age 10, single, at school, born in PA, parents born in PA Guy, son, born June 1892, age 8 (or maybe 7 still), single, at school, born in PA, parents born in PA Note: although all 4 children were listed as "at school" , the 2 oldest are shown as having attended 0 months in the previous year, and the 2 youngest had attended for 7 months (the normal number apparently) Henry's age of 43 and birth date of Aug 1856 calculate out correctly, but do not match with his age in all other censuses or with his birth date in the family Bible. He probably was 47 in 1900 - age was probably supplied by one of the children. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ we have 2 photos of the Walker house in Rockhill, PA, taken about 1907 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Old family information was that Maud Walker's husband was named James Somers but I have never been able to locate any family with a similar name with a wife named Maud/Maude. I have a photograph later identified by someone as "James Somers , husband of Maud Walker, Mount Union, Penna". Maybe a first husband ?? I have no photograph of Maude with a husband, just with her brother Guy. The 1910 census indicates that the Stumps had been married for 4 years (m. ca. 1906) when Maud would have been 22 per census age or 24 per our birth age. They were together at least through the 1930 census and the cemetary stone indicated that Mr Stump didn't die until 1961, and Maud V. Stump died in 1971, so there does not appear to have been a divorce or second marriage. If Mr Somers was our Maud's first husband she would have had to have been married to James Somers after the June 1900 census and before her 1906 marriage to Mr Stump. So Somers either died before 1906 or they were divorced. If this is the same Maud it seems odd that the family would not have mentioned Mr Stump and all her children. Perhaps family tradition simply had Mr Stump's name wrong or else these are two different Mauds, but the 1920 census data with the close proximity of both Henry Walker and Owen Cassidy strongly hints at this being the same Maud. However Elmer Stump appears to have come from Centre County and Elmer and Maude were living in Centre County in 1900 so it is unclear how Elmer could have met and married Maud Walker who was living in Rockhill or Mount Union. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1910 US Census, Bellefonte Borough, South Ward, Centre County, Pennsylvania, ED #8, page stamped 109, dwelling #78, family #79, genealogy.com image #7 of 34, enumerated April 22, 1910. address : 243 West Side of South Spring? Street Elmer Stump, head, age 29, married for 4 years, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: Lineman - Telephone Co, rented his house Maud H., wife, age 26, married for 4 years, had 2 children, 2 living, born in PA, parents born in PA John A., son, age 3, born in PA Mary, daughter, age 1-5/12, born in PA (Maud's middle initial of "H" here appears incorrect, the 1930 census shows it as "V" and her gravestone in My Union apparently also shows "V" and also spells her name "Maude") -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- 1920 US Census, Mount Union, Ward 2, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania,ED #85, page 8-A (stamped 166), dwelling #20, family #20 ancestry.com image #15 of 33, enumerated January 2, 1920 address: 206 Shirley Street Henry A. Walker, head, age 67, born in PA, father born in Scotland, mother born in PA, occ: Engineer - Railroad, rented his house Mollie H., wife, age 59?, born in PA, father born in Maryland, mother born in PA, occ: none Elmer Stump, head, age 38, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: electrician - Penn Central , rented his house Maud, wife, age 35, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: none Alvin, son, age 13, born in PA, attended school, Mary, daughter, age 11, born in PA, attended school Miriam, daughter, age 8, born in PA, attended school Jean, daughter, age 11/12?, born in PA They were living next door to Owen and Martha Cassady. Alvin is apparently identical to the John A. of the 1910 census. I am not absolutely positive that this is the right Henry A. Walker, but we do know that he had married again although we did not know his second wife's name. His age is correct as is his occupation. The Stump family is not assigned a dwelling or family number and is shown as if they were all living together. It seem likely that Maud Stump was Henry's oldest daughter although she should have been 37 not 35. We had previously believed that she had married a man named Somers, but had no real information on that and was never able to locate anyone of that name with a wife named Maud. The fact that they are living next to Owen Cassady who was a half-brother of Henry's late wife Margaret is also significant. The McConeghy family lore also said that Elsie Mae Walker had come from Mt. Union when she married Robert McConeghy. This would also support the idea that the family had moved to Mt Union shortly after 1910. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1930 US Census, Mt Union, Huntingdon Co, Pennsylvania, ED #33, page #7-B (stamped 248-B), dwelling #167, family #186, ancestry.com image #14 of 36, enumerated April 8&9, 1930. address: 223 South Division Street Elmer G. All the children are listed as single, Fay's surname is dittoed as Stump ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mount Union Cemetery Transcription on the USGenWeb Huntingdon County website shows Elmer G. Stump 1882-1961 Maude V. Stump 1884-1971 Neither of these birth years agree with other data, 1900 census shows Elmer born in April 1881 1900 census for Henry Walker's daughter Maud shows her born in Oct 1882, but census ages of Elmer Stump's wife Maud tend to agree with the 1884 year, so perhaps it is not the same woman. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
