Note: In the Stanstead County marriage records, Thomas Cassady m. March 2 1862 Mary "Murvy", St. Patrice (St Patricks). He is the widower of Catherine Dunigan, the parents of Mary Murvy are listed as James Murvy(Mulray?) and Margarite (Margaret) Flaherty We have the image of the Saint Patrice (St Patrick) Church (Magog) Parish record of the marriage.(It is written in French) Thomas Cassady is listed as widower of Catherine Dunigan, Mary's name is clearly written as Mary Murvy and her father is listed as James Murvey [or possibly Murvez], deceased, and her mother as Marguerite Flaharty. Joseph Dunnigan was present at the ceremony. The handwriting is difficult to decipher. ------------------------------------------ Margarite Flaharty and Thomas Smith were the God-parents of Marguerite Eliza Cassady (=Margaret Cassady) also according to the St Patrick's parish records in Magog, Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada or the Stanstead Journal. We are not sure who Thomas Smith was, but surmise that he was the second husband of Margarite Flaharty and therefore Mary Mulray's step-father. Thus the reference to her in the Juniata Book biog of Owen as "Mary Smith" ---------------------------------------------- Maurice Langlois reported in November 2003 that : On 2 March 1862, Thomas secondly married a Mary Murroy? Muroy? Murvy? (see Mulver below) and that he has 3 letters dated 1878, from Mount Union, Huntingdon Co. Pennsylvania One is a Power of Attorney to her son Owen, signed by Mary Mulver (her mark) and witnessed by Thomas Cassidy. We now have images of these documents. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mary's maiden name is in doubt, it was recorded in some places as Murvy, perhaps Murphy ?, or also as Mulray, she was also apparently known as Mary Smith, Smith was her stepfather's surname. Maurice Langlois, a Donigan descendant from Canada, has a letter dated 1878 from Mt Union PA that is a Power of Attorney to her son Owen, signed by Mary Mulver (her mark) and witness by Thomas Cassidy. So far that is the most believable form of her name, but why would she have been signing her name as Mary Mulver in 1878 when she was then Mary Cassady ??? Perhaps just to clarify her maiden name for legal purposes since the power of attorney dealt with a small inheritance due her. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- 1870 US Census, Philipstown,(post office: Mahopac Falls),Putnam County, New York, ED #, page #54 (stamped #101-B), dwelling #337, family #427, genealogy.com image #, enumerated June 30, 1870. the dwelling apparently was some sort of apartment house, there were 6 different families living in it Thomas Casity(sic), head, age 49, born in Ireland, parents foregn born, occ: foundryman, was not a citizen Mary, wife, age 42, born in Ireland, parents foreign born, occ: keeps house, could not read or write Margarite(sic), daughter, age 7, born in NY, attended school Kate, daughter, age 5, born in NY, attended school Bridgitt(sic), daughter, age 3, born in NY -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1880 US Census, Village of New Rockhill, Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, dwelling #8, family #13, enumerated June, , 1880 by William H. Margaret Cassady) according to the St Patrick's (St Patrice) parish records in Magog, Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada or notices in the the Stanstead Journal. We are not sure who Thomas Smith was, but surmise that he was the second husband of Margarite Flaharty and thus [Mary Mulray or Mary Murphy or Mary Murvy)'s step-father. Thus the Juniata biography's reference to Mary as "Mary Smith" (In some excerpted source data or in the original handwritten sources, the surname Mulray or Murphy seems to have been incorrectly transcribed or recorded as Murvy ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- In the Stanstead County marriage records, Thomas Cassady m. March 2 1862 Mary "Murvy", St. Patrice . He is the widow of Catherine Dunigan, the parents of Mary Murvy are listed as James Murvy and Margaret Flaherty These records also list 2 other Dunigans : Joseph Dunigan m. Jan 29 1851 Sara McCoffrey. His parents are listed as Patrick Dunigan and Catherine Johnson, and her parents are given as Charles McCoffrey and Ann Carroll. Patrick Dunigan m. Jan 10 1851 Catherine Spellman, widow of Harvy Jacques and Patrick was the widower of Catherine Johnson (the above parents of Joseph) There is also one Donigan listed Edward Donigan m. Nov 24 1879 Flavie Moquin. His parents Patrick Donigan and Ann Lee. her parents David Moquin and Flavie Menard. The records of Dorchester County list many Cassadys but none match. For further information on the history of this region consult "L'Histoire de la Paroisse de Saint-Malachie" by Jules-Adrein Kirouac, Quebec 1909. (we have not yet located this book to consult it) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- According to the transcription of the Owen Cassady's biog. in the Juniata Valley History book below, Mary died in 1872 in Orbisonia, PA. This cannot be correct since she is listed in the 1880 census. That was probably a typrographical error. It possibly should read 1882. [note: this extract contains several errors but is a major source of much of our knowledge about Thomas Cassady and his descendants. The book was compiled in 1897. "Owen J. Cassady, farmer and stockraiser, Wayne twsp. P.O. Newton Hamilton , Mifflin Co. was born May 8, 1854 in Newport, Vermont. He is a son of Thomas and Catharine (Donigan) Cassady. His father Thomas Cassady was born in County Monaghan, Ireland and was a farmer. At the age of 16 he emigrated to America coming from Queenstown in a sailing vessel that required 6 weeks to make the passage. Landing at Quebec, Canada, he remained there for some time and then came to Lowell, Mass., where he secured employment as watchman in a cotton factory. From there he returned to Canada, settling at Magog as a farmer. He subsequently removed to Cold Spring, N. Y., where he worked in a foundry for a few years , but eventually came to Pennsylvania in August 1869 and resided in Mifflin Co. where he was a miner at the Matilda Mines and Furnace of Wayne township, at the same time working with his sons on the farm. He has attained to robust old age and resides with his son Philip Cassady. Thomas Cassady was married to Catharine Donigan, born in Magog, Canada where their marriage took place. They had 12 children as follows: Charles, engaged in livery business in state of New York; David working railroad shops, Altoona; Edward, a farmer in Wayne township; Ellen(Mrs. Daniel B Snyder) of Mt. Union, PA; Annie (Mrs. William Eaby) of Huntingdon, PA; Owen J. of Wayne township; James, a railroad employee at Huntingdon; Ella (Mrs. William Hatt) and Jennie (Mrs. John Hatt) twins, whose husbands are brothers; and both are employed at the Orbisonia mines; Philip H., a farmer in Wayne township; Joseph , foreman in a cotton factory at Magog, Canada; and Edward who died in infancy. His wife having died in Magog , June 30, 1846, he was married again in 1966 (?? probable typo by the transcriber for 1866) to Mary Smith of Vermont (also born in Magog, Canada). The children of this marriage are: Margaret, deceased, (Mrs. Harry Walker); Catharine (Mrs, Charles Kline) Jersey Shore, PA; Bridget and John both died in youth. Mrs. Mary Cassady died in Orbisonia Pa. in 1872. [Note: apparently this is incorrect - possibly should be 1882] Thomas Cassady is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church." END OF ARTICLE
