Note: In the Stanstead County marriage records, Thomas Cassady m. March 2 1862 Mary "Murvy", St. Patrice (St Patricks). He is the widower of Catherine Dunigan, the parents of Mary Murvy are listed as James Murvy(Mulray?) and Margarite (Margaret) Flaherty We have the image of the Saint Patrice (St Patrick) Church (Magog) Parish record of the marriage.(It is written in French) Thomas Cassady is listed as widower of Catherine Dunigan, Mary's name is clearly written as Mary Murvy and her father is listed as James Murvey [or possibly Murvez], deceased, and her mother as Marguerite Flaharty. Joseph Dunnigan was present at the ceremony. The handwriting is difficult to decipher. ------------------------------------------ Margarite Flaharty and Thomas Smith were the God-parents of Marguerite Eliza Cassady (=Margaret Cassady) also according to the St Patrick's parish records in Magog, Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada or the Stanstead Journal. We are not sure who Thomas Smith was, but surmise that he was the second husband of Margarite Flaharty and therefore Mary Mulray's step-father. Thus the reference to her in the Juniata Book biog of Owen as "Mary Smith" ---------------------------------------------- Maurice Langlois reported in November 2003 that : On 2 March 1862, Thomas secondly married a Mary Murroy? Muroy? Murvy? (see Mulver below) and that he has 3 letters dated 1878, from Mount Union, Huntingdon Co. Pennsylvania One is a Power of Attorney to her son Owen, signed by Mary Mulver (her mark) and witnessed by Thomas Cassidy. We now have images of these documents. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- marriage record in Quebec states : Thomas Cassidy (sic) married Catharine Donigan July 7 1841 in Canton de L'Est Thomas's parents : Phillip Cassidy and Ellen McCabe [sometimes transcribed as McCak] Catharine's parents : Patrick Donigan and Catharine Johnston (this information only come to us by second hand, I have not seen the record or any official transcription) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- Maurice [?] a Donigan descendant reports the following. "Thomas married Catherine Donigan on 7 July 1841 at St Patrick's mission, at "The Outlet " (now Magog, Quebec). Catherine was godmother to a child in 1839, in Stanstead Quebec, which indicates that they were here in 1839. The Cassidys, Donigans, Donahues and the Smiths settled at The Outlet. 1861 Canadian Census data from Maurice Langlois, a Canadian Donigan descendant. Thomas Cassady, age 37 [born abt 1824] Catherine, wife, age 42, [born abt 1819] David, son age 16, [born abt 1845] Ellen, daughter, age 12, [born abt 1849] Anna, daughter, age 9, [born abt 1852] Owen, son, age James, son, age 6, [born abt 1855] Susanna, daughter, age 5 [born abt 1856] Mary, daughter, age 5, [born abt 1856] Philip, son, age 3 [born abt 1858] Susanna and Mary may have been twins, but not necessarily. (I have not seen the actual Canadian Census records and do not know if any additional details are given -RKM) [note that the following children are not listed, Charles (about age 17), Ella J. (we had her the same age as Mary Jane as her twin, and Joseph Albert. apparently the census was taken sometime before June 1861 when Catherine died and before Joseph Albert was born. Charles might have been out working elsewhere by age 17, Ella is a mystery, because Maurice does not mention her at all.] Catherine died June 10, 1861 Those children's birth dates Maurice Langlois supplied from church records are as follows: David: 22 Nov 1845 Edward: 6 Aug 1847 Ellen: 30 March 1849 Owen M: 22 May 1853 Others: Susanna, Mary, James, Anna, Philip and Charles: he had no birth dates. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- In the Stanstead County, Quebec marriage records, Thomas Cassady m. They do not apprear to be listed in the Cromwell Twp or the Orbisonia Borough census that year. I searched the entire Wayne Township, Mifflin section and he wasn't there - only David and Edward and they were apparently living with a farmer, not on a farm of their own, The Juniata Valley History biog for Owen Cassady says that Mary died in Orbisonia in 1872 this can't be correct since she is listed in the 1880 census (unless Thomas married a third time to another Mary) It possibly should have read 1882. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The McConeghy family records had the name "Thomas Cassady" and the death date 1887 and family history said that Thomas's wife (name unknown) had come from Magog, Quebec, Canada and died in 1882 in Rockhill, PA. Also family data said Thomas had been born in Ireland. On that basis, we estimated his birth year to have been maybe before 1844 because most of the other Cassady siblings were born in Magog according to Sue Smith's data. Sue Smith's family data recalled a "Thomas I. Cassady" brother of David who lived in Huntingdon Co., PA and who outlived David. They had no further information about him. That may have really been David's son, who in David's obituary is listed as Thomas I. Cassady. The Cassady family had supposedly moved from Magog to NY and then to PA as a group. There is also a possibility that this Thomas was really David's father whose name was unknown and who has supposedly born in Ireland. -------------------------------------------------------------------- There was a Thomas Cassady who was in the Union Army in the Civil War in a Pennsylvania regiment but we have no idea if this was our ancestor or not. The regiment in question was recruited primarily in Allegany County which is not believed to be an area where our Thomas ever lived. here is the data :Thomas Cassady : Enlisted as a Private on 09 August 1862 Enlisted in Company I, 123rd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 09 August 1862 Absent for sickness on 13 May 1863 [this was the date the regiment was mustered out] Source: History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865. (PARoster) Published in 1870. (another source informs us that he served in company "I" There were 2 other men named Thomas Cassady who served as privates in 2 other Pennsylvania regiments, the 78th Penn. Inf., company "H" , and the 52nd Penn. Inf., company "A", but we have no detailed info on either of them, so can make no judgement as to a likely connection in either case. (There were also 2 different men named Thomas Cassady who served in New York regiments but both of those regiments were recruited in New York City so neither of those were likely to be our ancestor.) According to the Juniata book bio data (below), Thomas and family were in Cold Spring, NY (which is across the river from West Point) working in the foundry there which produced cannons at the time of the Civil War so he probably was not in the Army. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ As an aside, there is a person named John Cassady buried in the Phildelphia National Cemetery, Cassady, John, d. 05/01/1862, PVT CO G 16 NY INF, Plot: 44, Orig Bur Woodland, PA, * We don't know if this John was any relation. Obviously he could not be the John W. who is the only John we currently know about and who was a son of David Franklin Cassady, but he may have been an unknown sibling of David and Thomas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- extract from the bio of Owen J. Cassady from the book A BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE JUNIATA VALLEY. [note: this extract contains several errors but is a major source of much of our knowledge about Thomas Cassady and his descendants.] "Owen J. Cassady, farmer and stockraiser, Wayne twsp. P.O. Newton Hamilton , Mifflin Co. was born May 8, 1854 in Newport, Vermont. He is a son of Thomas and Catharine (Donigan) Cassady. His father Thomas Cassady was born in County Monaghan, Ireland and was a farmer. At the age of 16 he emigrated to America coming from Queenstown in a sailing vessel that required 6 weeks to make the passage. Landing at Quebec, Canada, he remained there for some time and then came to Lowell, Mass., where he secured employment as watchman in a cotton factory. From there he returned to Canada, settling at Magog as a farmer. He subsequently removed to Cold Spring, N. Y., where he worked in a foundry for a few years , but eventually came to Pennsylvania in August 1869 and resided in Mifflin Co. where he was a miner at the Matilda Mines and Furnace of Wayne township, at the same time working with his sons on the farm. He has attained to robust old age and resides with his son Philip Cassady. Thomas Cassady was married to Catharine Donigan, born in Magog, Canada where their marriage took place. They had 12 children as follows: Charles, engaged in livery business in state of New York; David working railroad shops, Altoona; [in 1870 he was a miner in Wayne Twp, Mifflin Co] Edward, a farmer in Wayne township; [in 1870 he was a miner in Wayne Twp living with David] Ellen(Mrs. Daniel B Snyder) of Mt. Union, PA; Annie (Mrs. William Eaby) of Huntingdon, PA; Owen J. of Wayne township; James, a railroad employee at Huntingdon; Ella (Mrs. William Hatt) and Jennie (Mrs. John Hatt) twins, whose husbands are brothers; and both are employed at the Orbisonia mines; Philip H., a farmer in Wayne township; Joseph , foreman in a cotton factory at Magog, Canada; and Edward who died in infancy. His wife having died in Magog , June 30, 1846, he was married again in 1966 (?? typo by the transcriber for 1866) to Mary Smith of Vermont (also born in Magog, Canada). The children of this marriage are: Margaret, deceased, (Mrs. Harry Walker); [Margaret died in 1896] Catharine (Mrs, Charles Kline) Jersey Shore, PA; Bridget and John both died in youth. Mrs. Mary Cassady died in Orbisonia Pa. in 1872. [this apparently is incorrect - she was listed in the 1880 census in Orbisonia, maybe she died in 1882?] Thomas Cassady is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church." END OF ARTICLE ------------------------------------------------------------------ The rest is all about Owen. This book was compiled in 1897. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- From "History or Mount Union and Shirleysburg and Shirley Township" courtesy of Ed Barben. [items enclosed in square brackets are notes I added later] Owen J. Cassady was born May 8, l854, in Newport, Vermont, a son of Thomas and Catharine (Donigan) Cassady. His father, Thomas Cassady, was born in Ireland and was a farmer. At the age of 16 he came to America, landing in Quebec, Canada, where he remained for some time prior to going to Lowell, Mass. From Lowell the family returned to Canada, settling at Magog, thence they came to Cold Spring, New York, and from that place to Pennsylvania in August, 1869 when they settled in Mifflin County. [Note: Thomas, second wife Mary and 3 children were actually still living in Philipstown/Cold Spring, NY in the 1870 census] Owen J. Cassady's father was a miner at the Matilda mines and also at the Wayne furnace in Wayne township for a number of years. He had 12 children as follows: Charles, David,Edward, Ellen, Annie, Owen J.,James, Ella, Jennie, Philip, Joseph and Edward who died in infancy.[Note: he also had 4 more children by his second marriage] O.J. Cassady received his education in the public schools of Vermont and of Wayne Township, Mifflin County. As a boy he started farming on a Vermont farm, but at the age of 16 he clerked in a store at Magog, Canada, remaining several years. He taught school for a number of years of his career.. For 8 years he farmed for shares on one of the Long Hollow farms, after which he bought a half interest in the Lucy Furnaces, which has 25 acres of land attached to it. (Note: Long Hollow is the valley between Mt. Union and McVaytown) He was married in 1879 to Mattie[Martha] Barben, also of Wayne Township. To this union 4 children were born. O. J. Cassady is a public spirited citizen, having been a tax collector for 3 terms. He is a member of the Methodist Church, being a trustee. Of late years his time is devoted principly to the superintendence of his real estate in terests in and around Mt. Union. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- There is a Philadelphia Naturalization record for a Thomas H. Cassady with a declaration of intent dated May 24 1872 in the court of common pleas, former allegiance: Great Britain and Ireland. No additional information was available on line so there is no way to know if this was our Thomas. But if he had been naturalized this might have been about the right period. He was working in the Cold Spring NY foundary in 1870 and in 1880 was in Orbisonia PA. ---------------------------------------
