Note: Phoebe's maiden name might have been something that began with McK. such as McKenna, because her youngest son appears to have had that as a middle name. Her age in the census appears to be 31, and the year is clearly shown as 1868, but that also shows that it had been overwritten, and if she had been married for 27 years as it also shows she could not have been born in 1868, so probably her age was 51 and the year was originally written as 1848 or 1849 and then the enumerator could not read her own writing and thought it was 31 and corrected the year later If she had been born in 1868 she would have only been 5 when she was married, if she was born in 1848 she would have been 25 which is much more likely. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ 1880 US Census, Orbisonia Town, Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, ED 202, Dweliing #58, family # 61, enumerated June 24, 1880, Roll 1134 Book 1, page 340-B, genealogy.com image 10 of 16 for Orbisonia. Charles Walker, head, age 29, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: laborer Phebe J. Walker, wife, age 21, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: keeping house Amanda E. Walker, daughter, age 3, born in PA, parents born in PA. Charles age is correct for the 1851 birth year we had Phebe/Phoebe's age would put her birth year about 1859, 1900 census shows her as 31 she should have been 41 then or we suspect that it was really 51 so that this 1880 census really may be age 31 butting her birthyear back to 1848/9 again. There is only 1 child shown here, so our supposition that the missing parent of the 1900 grandson was older than Amanda now seems incorrect. So we assume he must have been slightly younger. Possibly he was the grandson living with Eliza in 1880 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- 1900 US Census, Rockhill Borough, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, ED #103, Sheet # 12-A (stamped 307-A), genealogy.com image # 9 of 10, enumerated June 18, 1900, Series: T623 Microfilm: 1414 Book: 2 Page: 307 . address: Iron Street (no numbers given) Charles C. Walker, head, age 45, born April 1855, married for 27 years, born in PA, parents born in PA, occ: day laborer, unemployed for 5 months, marked as could not read or write or speak English Phoebe, wife, age 31, born June 1868, married for 27 years, had 4 children, 2 living, born in PA, parents born in PA, could read and write, occ: blank Amanda M., daughter, age 23, born June 1876, born in PA, could read and write, occ: blank (next page) Wsley(sic) McK. Walker, son, age 3, born Nov 1896, born in PA, Jefferson Naugle(?), boarder, age 45, born May 1855, born in PA, occ: Day Laborer, unempleyed for 12 months, could not read write or speak English William E. Walker, grandson, age 5, born May 1895, born in PA. It seems unlikely that Charles, or the boarder could not speak English, so that section is probably an entry error. Several other people with normal English surnames who supposedly were born in PA were also marked as being unable to speak English. Perhaps the enumerator was overly picky about how well people spoke ?? Son's name looks like Ursley or Wsley, it probably was Wesley. There appear to be errors in the ages and birth dates of Charles and Phoebe. It is possible that there is a middle initial for Phoebe in the census, but there are subtotals written on top of the names so if there was a middle initial it is now illegible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------
