Potts, son, age 1, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham (William A. Potts' middle name was probably Armstrong, he apparently died before 1871) all were living in the same house. It seems likely that Matthew Potts took over the boat building business from Armstrog Mewburn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1871 English Census, Monk Wearmouth, Sunderland, Durham County, England, page 7 (stamped 35) and page 8 address: 30 Thomas Street sched #46 Matthew Potts, head, age 41, Married, occ: Boat Builder, born in Sunderland, Durham Margaret Potts, wife, age 37, Married, born in Sunderland, Durham Elizabeth G. POTTS, Daur, Female, 19, born in Mwmouth, Durham, England Matthew M. POTTS, Son, Male, 17, born in Mwmouth, Durham, England, occ: Boat Builder Ada M. William Mewburn is given as "brother" but he would have been Margaret's brother, so he would have been "brother-in-law" Grace Mewburn, is given as "sister-in-law". They were Margaret's older brother and sister "U" stands for "unmarried". -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - There is a William Mewburn in the IGI (LDS family submission : batch #8501630 sheet # 35 source call # 1395931) reported to have been christened in Monkwearmouth, Durham in Jan 11, 1818 , his parents were Armstrong Mewburn, and Grace. Thus his birth would be expected to have been in december 1817. It is tempting to identify him with our William although the 1881 census age is a year or two off he should have been 64 not 61. The 1881 transcription seems to have several numerical errors, so until I can view the actual census image I cannot be certain. There was a probable brother, Armstrong Mewburn, b. May 1,1823. who may also be the Armstrong Mewburn who married a Mary Swan on Jan 1, 1856 in Monkwearmouth. (source for the marriage is an LDS family submission) A marriage of Armstrong Mewburn to a Grace Holburn, Jan 8, 1815 in Sunderland recorded in Sunderland parish records(IGI LDS reference Batch # M002801, Source Call # 0091114, printout call # 6905058, and also source call # 0091116) A christening of an Armstrong Mewburn Oct 5, 1788 in Bishopwearmouth, Durham, his father was William Mewburn and Margaret, source : Bishopwearmouth, Durham transcript of parish records (IGI LDS ref : Batch # P000461, source call # 0091083 and 0091084, printout call # 6902848) There was another Armstrong Mewburn, born Jan 2, 1835 in Sunderland (parish records) his parents were Thomas Mewburn and Sarah Garratt. An earlier Armstrong Mewburn married Ursula Young April 24, 1736 at Saint Mary in the South Baily, Durham, Durham County, England. (parish records) possibly an ancestor. Another Armstrong Mewburn, married Margaret Fenwick, April 8, 1740 in Saint John's Church, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England (parish records) and an Armstrong Mewburn, was christened, March 6, 1715, in Earston by North Shields, Northumberland, England, his father was a James Mewburn. It is likely that this group was all related, but unproved. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
