Here are my rebuilt notes for William Current, so far .(I think there were a couple more items, I hope to locate later): Harry Long, (desc. of Wm. CURRENT's son JAMES in NJ), has been in contact with RICHARD NELSON CURRENT, Distinguished Prof. Emeritus, who lives in Maine (1995), but was a...professor of history at the University of N. Carolina. He has done extensive research on the CURRENT line. The professor has traced the family back to France where the name was spelled "COURANT". They left France and went to Eng. after WILLIAM the CONQUEROR. ....He says our Wm. CURRENT was b. in Ireland in 1740 and arrived in this country in 1745 as an orphan. (Marilyn's note: I believe it is more likely William was born bet. 1745-1747, based on the ages of his children, and the date of his death. That would alter the time he arrived in this country, as well. Maybe we haven't had success finding records of his arrival because we have been looking at the wrong time & place.) ----------------- Ernie Wirdel's NOTES (wife desc. of Jms. CURRENT of NJ; EWirdel@@aol.com): There is evidence that Wm. CURRENT came to this country as a child in about (1745-1750). He probably was an "Indentured Servant". Since the common story in the CURRENT family is that the CURRENTs came from Ireland, and since Ireland is predominantly Catholic, and further, since no Catholic Currents were found in this research, it is presumed that the CURRENT roots are in Protestant Northern Ireland, not Scotland. --------------- The following from a desc. of ELISHA BARTON CURRENT, (grandson of Wm. CURRENT & ESTHER LEMON, named after the man who took Wm. CURRENT in when he arrived in NJ as an orphan.) ELISHA's family had special reason to retain details of Wm's early NJ years. (A photocopy of this report was passed on to me by Nancy Hastie): "The first record of the CURRENT family dates from 1745. A family by the name of CURRENT which consisted of three men that could have been brothers, left Ireland on a ship bound for New Jersey, U.S.A. "Due to the crowded and unsanitary conditions, the men were stricken with ship fever and only one son, or brother, WILLIAM CURRENT survived to reach our American shores, the promised land. He must have looked upon our friendly shores with some misgivings, as he was alone and probably had very few wordly goods. His day of gloom turned to sunshine when ELISHA BARTON and his good wife took him in." --------------- Was William's family with a group of Currents, and only his family died?: Posted by: Aletha Current-Arnold, April 21, 1999 My ancestor James Current had a brother whose name we do not know, who immigrated with him to US. This may be who you are looking for. Except my ancestors were originally from Ireland, and I believe left from Monmouth, Wales. -------------------- Anthony Whelan's NOTES: I was told the story of CURRENT entry into America (by a historian/genealogist in the American Midwest named CURRENT of our lineage.) A ship left Ireland and among the passengers, MR. & MRS. CURRENT and 12 children. During the trip all but one died (probably smallpox). The survivor was 12 year old WILLIAM CURRENT and when the ship landed in 1747 in America, the boy was taken under wing by one ELISHA BARTON who raised him. -- the story is family lore. ---------------- Fran Current, (mfcurre@@sandia.gov) Albuqueque, NM, 7/2/01: My Grandmother, now deceased, took up geneology starting in the mid 70's and has gathered information that matches what you have. My lineage is from one of 2 Current brothers who homesteaded in the eastern Iowa county of Jackson after a harrowing journey from the Niagara area all the way through the Great Lakes region. My aunt has picked up the geneology material and is updating it now. She would be very interested in collaborating. Her name is LINDA CURRENT (presently in western Indiana) ...Grandma also shared the story of a family of CURRENTs who immigrated from Ireland prior to the revolutionary war. All died of ships fever except one boy who became an endentured servant. His offspring moved to Canada during the revolutionary war. -------------- 1753 - Sussex Co., NJ was created from Morris Co., (Morris Co. was made earlier from Hunterdon Co.) SAMUEL RYERSON later settled in Pt. Ryerse in Canada, near where the Currents also came to roost.) NOTE: a similiar regiment raised in nearby Orange Co., NY in Aug. 1777 was named "The Orange Rangers", Col. BAYARD COMLANDER, commanding. In August 1777, a JOHN LeMONT (JOHN LEMON?) was listed as a Pvt in "BARCLAY's Company" of Orange Rangers. NOTE: WM CURRENT served in a Tory unit that apparently conducted operations as a "Terrorist Type Unit". Did "Sons of Liberty", a similiar unit on Rebel side possibly led by COL. ISAAC CARY (of North Church, Sussex Co., NJ) harrass the Current family in retaliation? This senario would allow for such activity to have taken place in 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1783. Further, it has been noted that such harrasments in fact did take place as late as early 19th century -- esp. as another war with Great Britain was on horizon near 1812. ----------------------- E-MAIL from: Todd W. Braisted, www.royalprovincial.com, IVBNNJV@@aol.com, July 22, 2004 "ROBERT ELLISON was one of three Sussex County Loyalists empowered to raise a Loyalist unit. ELLISON himself enlisted but few people and was apprehended by the Rebel authorities. The unit was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel JOSEPH BARTON and became the 5th Battalion, New Jersey Volunteers.....I do not see WILLIAM CURRENT as a member of that or any other Loyalist unit. ROBERT ELLISON only enlisted men in the period December 1776 - January 1777 before being captured. Sounds like your fellow was also taken prisoner in that period and sent home after paying a fine. I'll try and look at some state Committee of Safety proceedings to see if there is any mention of him there." ------------------- Ernie Wirdel's timeline: 6/20/1778 - Inquisitions filed against following persons acused of having joined & aided & assisted the army of the King of Great Britain in the present war against the American States (Many named including) MICHAEL LEMON of Oxford, WILLIAM CURRENT, and JAMES MOODY--- which inquisitions were returned at the last session held in Sussex County via proclamation made in open court according to law. Now therefore if the persons against whom inquisitions have been so found, or some person in their behalf, will not appear at the next court in the said county to traverse the inquisitions, final judgement will thereupon be enterd in favor of the State. 8/26/1778 - Council of Safety meeting in Morristown: Agreed to pay JOHN SMITH for services rendered in the provisions for a group of Tories captured in and around Sussex County. Said group included a man named WILLIAM CURRENT who was being held in the jail in Newton. 1778 - From NJ Archives: Notice is given to all persons who have any claim, interest, or demand to, in or against the estate of (amomg others) JAMES MOODY ( Lt. In the American Volunteers regiment of British Empire Loyalists who led many raids against Rebel sympathizers in Sussex Co. area of NJ) & Wm CURRENT. The fact that JAMES MOODY & Wm CURRENT were captured and indicted at approximately same time leads to assumption that Wm. CURRENT served under command of JAMES MOODY. It appears Wm. CURRENT was pardoned under certain specified terms. It should also be noted that some individuals held in this instance were sentenced to be hanged in the square at Morristown. ----------- NJ Archives, Vol. 33, Calendar of Wills 1761-1770, p. 604 - 1780, Sept. 13.
