Notes
a. Note:   Zelma was a very tall person with alburn hair and blue eyes. She lived to be 96. She was born on the Bale homestead. Her father was David and his father was James. James and Sarah Havens Bale arrived in Ohio by covered wagon from NJ and purchased a 247-acre Ohio farm at $15 an acre. On May 1, 1849 they began their journey west. They traveled in a large covered wagon drawn by two horses.
They towed a one-horse buggy with wood axles behind the wagon and are said to have herded some animals as they came. Some of the plants they carried may still be on this or a neighboring farm. A Bale daughter gave birth during this journey. They arrived safely at their new home on May 23. They had to wait for the items they had sent by canal. By fall, they had planted about 20 acres of corn using a large single shovel plow on a wood frame.
This farm is at 7046 Bale Kenyon and belongs to a Bale Descendant.
Zelma lived on this homestead when young. Her mother died when she was about 7. She attended the Clymer School at the end of Bale Kenyon and Powell Roads. She may have walked to school. She graduated. She may have worked for her uncle, John Bale, in Delaware, when she was young. She may have been a seamstress.
