A Confederate soldier, enlisted 7/20/1862 at Van Buren, Arkansas. Served with company G of the 7th Missouri Infantry (aka "Jackman's Regiment" (9/1/62-12/31/62), aka the 16th Missouri Infantry (from 12/15/1863). A 1st Sgt. Cumming (apparently the former company commander of G Co.), under the 2nd Bde (Col. Simon P. Burns), of the 2nd Div. (Brig. Gen. Mosby M. Parsons), under Churchill's Division (Brig. Gen. Thomas James Churchill). Note that his brothers' regiment, the 8th, was commanded by Col. Charles S. Mitchell, in the 1st Bde (Brig. Gen. John B. Clark, Jr.) of Parson's Div.
