 "Thursday afternoon, Elmina Tete, widow of John Vives, and a native of this parish, died in New Orleans after an illness of several months. She was a resident of this parish most of her life and left for New orleans after her husband's death. She is a sister of Mrs. Leonce J. Himel and Mrs. A. R. Munson of Assumption and is survived by three llittle children. Funeral services were held at St. Anne Church Friday." The paper is published on Saturday, so date of death is Aug. 28, 1913.
  This confirms that she went by the name of Elmina, although family called her Mina. My father, Van Joseph Vives, was the oldest of the children and was 12 at the time of her death. He never mentioned, as far as I can remember that he lived in New Orleans for a short time. He was 4 years old when his father died. The question arises then, whether or not Elmina went to New Orleans alone and left her children in the care of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Munson (her sister) after her husband's death. We know that the two boys, Van and Carl, were raised by the Munsons and the girl, Angeline (Nina), was raised by Leonce Himel. Carl did not spend much time with the Munsons before he ran away and settled in Detroit, Michigan.
  In the 1900 Census she is living at 1117 Hospital St. in New Orleans with her children, Van O. Vives, age 9, Carl F. Vives, age 7, and Angelina M. Vives, age 6. At this time she is widowed and working at a packing house. She is renting at this residence.
