a. Note:   HOUSTON, Texas—Houston Post, Oct 29, 1919—Hundreds of business men and club members were shocked at the sudden death Tuesday of Werther E. Gehring, 30, of 5307 La Branch Street. Born Friedrich Werther Gehring, Edward was later added. He was named after Father Herman Gehring's hometown Werther North Rhein-Westphania, Prussia. Mr. Gehring was one of the best known and best liked young business men of Houston. He was born at Willis, Texas, but came to Houston when a boy. He entered the employ of the Underwood Typewriting company as office boy and typewriter repair man and worked his way upward until, at the time of his death, he was considered one of the best salesmen in the city.
 Raised on December 3, 1912 in Brownwood, Texas, Masonic Lodge No. 279, he achieved a Masonic thirty-second degree in April 1918. He belonged to Waco Lodge No. 42, Gray Lodge No. 320 and Arabia Temple, where he was a member of the uniform patrol and a favorite of the other members. He was also a member of the Salesmanship Club and won first prize there six weeks ago as the best salesman in the club.
 STRICKEN SUDDENLY. Mr. Gehring was in apparent good health Saturday and visited Arabia Temple and business friends. Sunday evening he became ill and died at his home at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday. It is thought he died of encephalitis associated with the world wide influenza great pandemic hitting Houston 1918 and winter 1919. He is survived by his wife, Catherine B. Gehring; one daughter, Kathryne; his mother, Mrs. Amelia Leverkuhn Stevens; one sister, Mrs. Ella Louise Romaine, and one brother, Herman F. Gehring.
 Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday from the home the family had just purchased in May at 5307 La Branche. The Rev T. J. Windham will officiate and burial will be in Washington Cemetery, Gray Lodge No. 320 will be in charge.
 ESCORT IS PLANNED. The uniform patrol will meet at Arabia temple at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday before going to the home. The Waco Masonic lodge, of which Mr. Gehring was a member, was invited to attend the funeral and all other clubs to which he belonged will attend in bodies.
 Honorary pallbearers will be H .F. Bruedeon, H. E. Hestor, Clarence Yanch, D.A. Killson, W. B. Welling and Bragg Calloway. Active pallbearers will be: George Holland, E. H.Prueter, Fred Ellison, A.S. Pimental, Frank Cowen and James M. Collier. Settegast-Kopf Company is in charge.
