NEW TRIER MAYOR GREGORY SCHABERT, 45, DIED MAY 7TH HASTINGS GAZETTE 15 MAY 1958:
Gregory Schabert, 45, mayor of the village of New Trier the past 6 years passed away suddenly last Wednesday evening, May 7, following a heart attack.
He had been in ill health for several years. The day of his death, he had been at work in his customary place in the Hudson Mfg. plant, where he was employed. His sudden passing, coming without warning, has proven a terrible shock to the entire community.
Mr Schabert was the son of Mrs Sophie Schabert and the late John Schabert. Most of his life had been spent in this community. He was united in marriage with Monica Crist of So St Paul and she with five sons, John, Robert, Arnold, Marvin and Daniel are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. A daughter born to them, passed away in infancy.
Other family survivors are his mother, Mrs Sophie Schabert of San Leandro, Cal, sisters Mrs John (Marie) Osgood, Mrs Madelyn Gilliland, Miss Gertrude Schabert of San Leandro, Mrs Leona Bauer of Cannon Falls, Mrs William (Adelphine) Franke, So St Paul, brothers Mark, Ed of Douglas, Sgt Nick Schabert stationed in Germany and Art of San Leandro.
The remains lay in state in the family home at New Trier until Saturday morning at 10:00 when services were conducted in St Mary's church Rev N. P. Gillen officiating.
Serving as Pallbearers were William Rischette, Claude and Francis Donndelinger, Richard Schabert, James Brown, and Peter Salzl. Interment was made in St Mary's cemetery.
A number of relatives came from Calif, So St Paul, Cannon Falls, Hastings and other neighboring communities to attend the final church rites.
