Continued: CHARLES HEINE SERVED TWO COUNTRIES Charles Heine was a soldier in Germany and the United States Capt. Charles Heine, for 24 years a resident of Jackson, and whose sudden death occurred at Lansing Monday, Feb 20, was a true American citizen and a valiant soldier in the Civil War. He was born in Germany 69 years ago and entered the German Army at the age of 18. A few years after coming to America he was married in 1853 at Marshall, where he made his home for a number of years. In 1861 he enlisted as a first lieutenant in the Sixth Michigan, was taken prisoner during an early campaign and after his discharge he came to Michigan and organized the 14th Michigan battery, of which he was captain during the remainder of the war. He was for a long time a railroad man, having been at one time ticket agent for the Michigan Central at Marshall and at Jackson. He leaves a widow, three daughters, Mrs J C Hoffstetter, Erie, Pa., Mrs George E Bartlett, Ionia, Mich., Mrs Matilda Walker of Jackson, and one son, W.F.Heine, residing Shullsburg, Wis. The funeral services were held at the residence, 1612 E Main St Thursday at 12:30, Rev. W H Alber officiating, and the remains were taken on the 2:40 pm train to Marshall for interment in the family lot. The pall bearers at Lansing were three captains and one colonel of the Civil war - escort Auditor General Dix, Peninsular commandery, Knights Templar of Kalamazoo, of which Capt Heine was a member, sent an escort which accompanied the remains to Marshall, where the funeral services were concluded by the Ancient Order United Workmen of Marshall, of which the deceased was a charter member.
