Notes
a. Note:   obit The Weekly Freeman, Kingston, NY , Friday September 3, 1880 George Colville, the boatman and ice dealer
One of the occurrences Wednesday was the death of Mr. George Colville, an old and respected citizen of Rondout, and one who has been identified with much of its past history. Only a few years ago he was thought to be well-to-do, but through several misfortunes, among which was the sinking of a vessel he was interested in and the death of three of his children, he had been reduced almost to absolute poverty. The immediate cause of death was comsumption. His business for years was to handle and deliver ice, which work for a person not vigorous in health is not conducive to long life.
Mr. Colville has helped a great many of our young men to start in the boating business and many of them owe their present prosperity to him, and it would be a good thing, now that adversity has overtaken the family and taken away a father and husband, that they do what they are able to smoothe the pathway of the widow and fatherless children. Much has already been done by relatives and friends to make pleasant his last hours. One of the kind acts in this relation was that of Mr. Edwin Sherer, who in compliance with a request of Mr. Colville allowed him to occupy his old homestead free of rent, as deceased wished to spend his last hours in his old home. The house had come into possession of Mr. Sherer by buying it at mortgage foreclosure, but which purchase was done at the request of Mr. Colville as Mr. Sherer was a warm friend to deceased and did not take advantage of him in this matter. Mr. Colville was a member of Rondout Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a member in good and regular standing of Rondout Lodge No. 343, F. & A. M., by which the last honors to his memory will be paid Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. George L. Wachmeyer is in charge of the undertaking arrangements. The ceremony at the grave will be in charge of Charles H. Van Wert, the present master of the lodge. The funeral serman will be delivered at the Wurts Street Methodist Church. Mr. Colville was aged 50 years and leaves a widow and six children.
