a. Note:   CENSUS DATA: The 1870 federal census, Clay Co., AL, Ashland, p. 7, taken 3 August 1870 shows a F. R. Bonner, female, age 30, born AL living in the home of Thomas S. and Lucinda Bonner.
  COMMENTARY: After several years of looking for Frances Rosene Gamble Bonner, wife of William Smith Bonner, it is now known that the F. R. Bonner, female, age 30, born AL, shown above in the 1870 census is in fact, Frances Rosene Gamble Bonner living in the home of her inlaws. Also living in the home were: M. L., female, age 13, born GA; W. V., male, age 11, born GA; John, male, age 8, born GA; F. S., female, age 6, born GA. These are the children of Frances Rosene & William Smith Bonner. M.L. is Mary L. Bonner; W.V. is William Underwood Bonner; John is John T. Bonner, and F.S. is Frances Smith Bonner.

 CENSUS DATA: The 1880 federal census, Clay Co., AL, Ashland, Dist 36, taken 9 June 1880 shows Fannie R. Bonner, head, age 42, widowed, born AL. Also living in the home were: Willie Bonner, son, age 21, born AL, and farming; John T. Bonner, son, age 18, born Al and farming. The census record is too dark to read, so other information was not available.
  COMMENTARY: This record finally confirms that William Smith Bonner was deceased by 1880, thereby confirming the idea that William probably perished in the Civil War.
 NOTE: We have further learned that William Smith Bonner died on or about 14 Jun 1862 based on hand transcribed note by his father, Thomas S. Bonner, Jr and administrator of William Smith Bonner's estate.
  CENSUS DATA:The 1900 census, Clay Co., AL, Ashland Pct., SD=4, ED=108, sheet 6A, taken 6 June 1900, shows a Frannie or Fannie R. Bonner living in the home of William Bonner. Frannie/Fannie R. Bonner is shown as mother, age 62, born Oct. 1837 in GA, widowed, mother of 6 & 4 living, father & mother born SC. William Bonner, age 41, is Frannie's son, William U. Bonner, born Dec 1858.
  CENSUS DATA: The 1910 census shows Fannie R Bonner, 73, widowed, born abt 1837 in Alabama, living in Precinct 12, Clay, Alabama, Talladega Road, White, Female, father and mother born SC, and mother of 4 and 3 living. She is living in the home of her son, William Underwood Bonner and his family. Living in the family were William W Bonner 51, head; Fannie R Bonner 73, mother; Eddie C Bonner 39, wife; Robert D Bonner 11, son; Roy W Bonner 7, son; Graves W Bonner 3, son.
  CENSUS DATA: 1920 Census: Shows Fanny R Bonner, 82 m-n-l, wd, AL SC SC living in the home of Stephen D. and Fanny S. Bonner Treadwell. The family is living in Ashland, Clay, AL (See full census information in notes for Stephen D. Treadwell).

 He enlisted in Carroll County GA as a private in Company E, 1st Georgia Cavalry
 he was discharged Jun 16, 1862. Widow is listed on the 1880 Clay County Census
 as HH with two children. Couple married in 1855 in Carroll County GA. Widow
 later filed for his pension in Clay County AL. Widow died in 1921, she is buried in the Ashland City Cemetery Clay County."
