 Jude Allen - Wakefield, NH
Recent posts have given the raw data and information about Jude Allen (1743-1828) of Epsom. The purpose is to determine if he has been incorrectly given in the majority of genealogical records, as the son of Samuel Allen (1711-1808). The issue came to light when Elaine Morris of Michigan stopped in at the old library in Epsom a couple weeks ago.
  To reprise:
Jude Allen (1678-June 16, 1738) married Deborah Locke and has, among others, two children: Samuel, born 1711 and Jude born about 1713.
According to the Locke Genealogy, page 32, Jude Allen, son of Jude Allen and Deborah Locke, died age 8 in 1751. This is disproved as son Jude is mentioned in his mother's will of 1753, as is his first born son Jude. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register of 1902 in its article on descendants of Charles Allen, does not follow either Jude's in question.
Both sons, Samuel and Jude, had sons names Jude. Samuel's son Jude, just about everywhere you look, is given as Jude of Epsom (abt. 1743-1828). Jude, son of Jude, appears to have died young in most sources. It would appear now that that is not the case. The elder Jude Allen died in 1738, his son Jude in 1793. The 1790 census gives us 2 Jude Allens:
Jude Allen of Epsom with himseld, 2 males under 10 and 4 females
Jude Allen of Shapleigh, Maine, with himself, 3 males under 10 and 2 females
Of significance is the location of Shapleigh, Maine, bordering Wakefield, New Hampshire. The 1777 tax roll for Wakefield, NH, includes Samuel, Samuel Jr., Jude and Abner Allen. The elder Samuel signed the Association Test in Wakefield in 1776 establishing his residence there, and the tax roll of 1777 establishes three sons, Samuel Jr., Jude and Abner. Son Jude remains in Wakefield/Shapleigh through at least 1793, and appears next in Norwich, Vermont, as a member of the early Baptist Church. He died June 5, 1831 in Norwich, Vermont about age 92, and is buried there.
Meanwhile, Jude Allen is raising a family in Epsom.
Clearly the Jude Allen of Wakefield, son of Samuel, has been overlooked. Jude Allen of Epsom, by default, is the son of Jude of Epsom (1713-1793) who, for what ever reason, does not appear in the 1790, perhaps living, not as head of household, with another son or daughter. Dolbeer gives the death of Jude Allen of Epsom as September 1828.
The unfortunate part is there is no deed or vital record known to absolutely verify the parentage of the two Jude's, though the circumstancial evidence cannot be overlooked.

(JEA conclusion: Our Jude Allen (1743 - 1828 - wife Sarah Philbrick) is not the son of Samuel Allen (1711 - 1808 - wife Anne Clark) but rather his brother Jude Allen (1713 - 1793 - wife Elizabeth Locke - he was known as Jude of Epsom - Jude Allen 1743 - 1828 - wife Sarah Philbrick was known as Jude Allen of Epsom)
 D. Neil Allen book "Out of Strawbery Banke" 2013 also shows it this way.

b. Note:   H1281
Note:   This Jude is identified in most instances as 'Jude of Epsom' abt 1743 - 1828
 -------------
 1790 census has 2 Jude Allen's:
1 - Jude Allen of Epsom with himself, 2 males under 10, and 4 females
probably: males Jude (1743 - 1828), and his children males Nathan, Joseph and females Ruth, Euphemia, Hannah, Polly (Wife Sarah had already died in 1787)
2 - Jude Allen of Shapleigh, ME with himself, 3 males under 10, and 2 females
This Jude Allen would be son of Jude Allen (1714 - 1793) and brother to Samuel Allen (1711 - 1808) with wife Elizabeth Locke
 Shapleigh, ME borders Wakefield, NH
