Note: From: Michael Verrall <[email protected]> Subject: [SFHG] Sussex strays Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 08:45:38 +0100 The following baptisms appear in the register of Tonbridge Independent Chapel (RG4/2114) October 20 1772: I baptised Thomas Davey the son of Thomas and Mary Davey (her maiden name was Simonds) at their house in the Cliffe, Lewes, Sussex. The child was born on Friday night September 11th 1772 about 20 minutes before 10 o'clock. June 14 1774: I baptised Mary Symonds Davy the daughter of Thomas and Mary Davey at their house in the Cliffe, Lewes, Sussex. The child was born on Tuesday evening May 12 1774 between 8 and 9 o' clock. On Tuesday April 23 1776 I baptised Frances Ann Davey the daughter of Thomas and Mary Davey at their house in the Cliffe, Lewes. The child was born on Sabbath Day morning, March 17th 1776. September 16th 1777: I baptised Ann Child the daughter of William and Sarah Child of Lewes at the meeting in the Cliffe, Lewes September 17th 1777: I baptised Mary Lawrence the daughter of Henry and Mary Lawrence at their house in Lewes. On Tuesday evening July 7th 1778 at the meeting in the Cliffe, before the sermon, I baptised William Davey the son of Thomas and Mary Davey of the Cliffe, Lewes. The child was born on Lords Day May 31 1778. On Tuesday May 9th 1789 I baptised Elizabeth Davey the daughter of Thomas and Mary Davey of the Cliffe at the new meeting in the Cliffe. The child was born April 1st 1780. It appears that the above minister who calls himself Pastor Samuel Shepherd of the Congregational Church of Christ at Tunbridge Wells travelled widely performing private baptisms as there are many within a 10 mile radius of Tunbridge Wells and as far north as Gravesend. In 1781, a new minister, John Rogers appears in the register; thereafter entries are of more locally based residents and are apparently all in the chapel. Michael Verrall |
